NC State assistant Rob Moxley shifting to Director of Player Personnel position

Mark Gottfried will have an assistant coaching vacancy to fill this offseason. Assistant coach Rob Moxley is going to transition into a new role as the Director of Player Personnel, the school announced on Sunday. That is the job previously held by Dereck Whittenburg.

From NC State:

In his new role, Moxley will serve as a mentor for men's basketball student-athletes, assist in personnel development and on-campus recruiting activities, as well as focus on a variety of administrative duties to assist the NC State men's basketball program.

The release from NCSU doesn't specify, but this move could be health-related. Moxley is diabetic, and last May he endured a severe episode that left him in the hospital for several days. He survived multiple strokes. Being an assistant coach in college basketball means traveling a lot, and that can take a toll. In his new position, he'll be cutting out all the offseason recruiting trips.

This is the first time Mark Gottfried has had a vacancy on his coaching staff in Raleigh. Moxley, Bobby Lutz, and Orlando Early each were hired as assistants when Gottfried came to NC State, and they've been on board ever since.

This will be a big development to watch once the season is over, since Gottfried is at a pivotal point in his tenure and NC State is now missing an excellent recruiter.
