NC State third baseman Evan Mendoza makes amazing play from his back

NC State sophomore Evan Mendoza has dabbled as both a pitcher and a position player in his brief Wolfpack career. On Saturday afternoon, he showed off his pitching arm ... from third base. With State protecting a 3-2 lead in the ninth inning, Boston College's Gian Martellini hit a ball hard at Mendoza, and, well ...

I mean, what? How? He smothers that sharply hit ball, rolls over and throws from his back, somehow getting enough mustard on the thing to make it a one-hopper--and it was not even a close play at first base, either. It's stuff like this that reminds me why my baseball career was so brief.

With Mendoza's help, NC State closed out the ninth inning for a 3-2 victory over Boston College. The Wolfpack evened the series with the Eagles, and improved to 13-3 (1-1) on the season. The rubber match between State and BC is set for 1 p.m. ET Sunday.
