The 1974 NC State team is one of the five worst title teams in the NCAA era?

I'm a big fan of analytics, and you don't have to be on this website more than 25 seconds to get that. When given the choice, I'm always going to err on the side of an objectivist approach. I think that's really important. But output is only as good as input, and when it comes to this, I just don't know, man...

PredictionMachine.com jumped head-first into controversy by attempting to rank every national championship team, using a pretty standard method:

To build our National Championship Power Rankings, we "played" every team against every other team, using strength of schedule adjusted statistics, 50,000 times each and ranked them by overall winning percentage of those games.

The thing is, this becomes really problematic once you dive back beyond 1995 or so. There are so many obvious problems with this, that actually there's probably no point in bothering with any teams outside the last quarter century. The statistics get fuzzier and fuzzier.

The results of this analysis place NC State's 1974 team among the worst to ever win a title. That's right, the team led by David Thompson and Tommy Burleson, which lost exactly one game in two years, and which beat a top-five Maryland team to get into the NCAAs, AND which happened to end the UCLA dynasty, is somehow a statistical footnote.

This is like denying David Thompson a legal dunk. Your rules are stupid, the route to them equally so, and how do we rectify this situation?

Butch Pierre candidate for NC State assistant coaching job, per report

NC State had an assistant coaching vacancy since Rob Moxley announced in early March that he'd be assuming a new role within the basketball program. One possible replacement is former Oklahoma State and LSU assistant Butch Pierre; in fact there is a "good chance" NCSU will hire Pierre, per ESPN's Jeff Goodman.

Pierre has been in coaching for 30 years, and even served briefly as an assistant for Bobby Lutz at Charlotte. From there, he moved to LSU, where he quickly established a reputation as an outstanding recruiter, helping the Tigers land the likes of Glen Davis, Tyrus Thomas, Anthony Randolph, Stromile Swift, Brandon Bass. At Oklahoma State, he was involved in nabbing commitments from five-stars LeBryan Nash and Marcus Smart.

LSU landed four McDonald's All-Americans while Pierre was coaching in Baton Rouge, and he helped Oklahoma State land a couple as well. In every single year as an assistant with the Cowboys, the school landed at least one four-star prospect.

Here's an old article from Rivals that provides some context on Pierre:

"Butch has a natural touch with people," Hartwell said. "He's very genuine. He's real. He makes you feel like you're family. Kids love him to death. He can relate to parents. They know he's going to take care of their kids."

Sounds like he'd be a nice addition to the staff.

Sacred Heart transfer Cane Broome down to 4: NC State, Cinncinnati, Creighton, Seton Hall

Cane Broome, who earned Player of the Year honors in the Northeastern Conference this past season, has four finalists, per ESPN's Jeff Borzello, and NC State made the cut. Broome averaged more than 23 points per game for Sacred Heart, which finished the season 12-18 overall.

As an undergraduate transfer, Broome will have to sit out the 2016-17 season, which is fine since NC State doesn't really need major guard help until the following season. Terry Henderson will be a senior in '16-'17, and Dennis Smith is almost certainly a one-and-done kid (he's still in the top 10 in mock drafts despite his injury), which will leave plenty of available playing time alongside Torin Dorn and Maverick Rowan.

I imagine he'd slide into the two-guard spot, while covering the point when needed. He's no stranger to a high workload or playing a ton of minutes, either. He was on the floor about as much as Cat Barber this season.

Monitoring Social Media Support

It’s been a week since Governor McCrory signed HB2. So, how are things looking on social media? On Twitter, there’s been outrage. But I actually think to get a more accurate gauge of things, you have to look at Facebook – in particular, Facebook ‘likes’. Facebook is less millennial-oriented, less likely to be dominated by […]

Calling out Ken Goodman and "bipartisan" bigotry

Because nobody else seems interested in rocking the boat:

In regards to the furniture market losing customers, State Representative Ken Goodman tweeted "April Market is not a vacation. It's critical for buyers. They'll come."

He also tweeted. "They manufacture in the most oppressive countries in the world."

In other words, if they don't come, here's an ad hominem reason for us to write them off. Aren't the Main Street Dems supposed to be pro-business? Apparently that only applies to businesses who support the suppression of certain elements in our society. And aren't the Main Street Dems supposed to be all about avoiding social issues and laser-focusing on economic growth? The truth is, they are mainly concerned with cashing in on what they see as a successful political movement by Republicans, and are willing to discard every element of the NCDP Platform in order to do that. Follow me below the fold so we can talk about that Big Tent:

Romer v. Evans provides the teeth to chew up HB2

The US Supreme Court has already spoken:

The U.S. Supreme Court, in a decision called Romer v. Evans, found that Colorado’s constitutional amendment violated the rights of gay Coloradans under the U.S. Constitution’s Equal Protection Clause. The amendment, stated the court, deprived one “politically unpopular group” – gays and lesbians in Colorado – from exercising their rights to persuade their local governments for the protections that other groups in those cities already enjoyed. There was no explanation for such a deprivation of rights, said the court, other than “animosity toward the class of persons affected.”

As the author notes, efforts to defend this prejudicial bill will likely fall on deaf ears, because their motives were plainly revealed during the process. The "Special Session" itself was called to head off the active date of Charlotte's non-discrimination ordinance, so they can't claim the two aren't directly connected. And as you can see when reading Romer v. Evans, taking away the rights of citizens to seek relief from their local governments is a big no-no:

The 3rd #goacc ToC: Officiating Sweet Sixteen

The best of the best (worst?) have been selected after a rigorous process by the selection committee. Now it's up to you to help determine the #goacc champion of the season.

Our last pair of games to examine are some real interesting ones. This lovely and aptly named regional featured some incredibly close votes that required some extensive viewing of monitors. Joking aside, this was the closest region in terms of margin of victory, and also featured the most upsets of any of the other regionals. What will this mean for this set of regional semifinals? That's up to you, so vote up here and make sure to use the Storystream links on the right hand side of the page!

Y'all I gotta be honest - I can't believe Frank Beamer was also eliminated by this 5 seed. The defending champion of #goacc won't be able to defend his title belt, unfortunately. Moving on to this matchup, there's been a decidedly noticeable trend that anything at all that makes fun of UNC tends to get more votes than others, so by that reason alone I think we could see the 5 seed advance here. It's a small chance, sure, but there's still a chance (Thanks Lloyd Christmas).

The 3rd #goacc ToC: Chestnut Hill Sweet Sixteen

The best of the best (worst?) have been selected after a rigorous process by the selection committee. Now it's up to you to help determine the #goacc champion of the season.

Heading up north, our Chestnut Hill regional was the only one out of the four to not feature a single upset in the second round. In fact, not only was this region straight chalk, but all of the higher seeds advanced by wide margins as well. Will that trend continue in this regional? That's up to y'all!

The Amazing Regional featured our biggest upset of the tournament so far, with this region's namesake being eliminated in the second round. That's right, ol' Coach K himself and his "amazing" press conference are out of the tournament, handedly being defeated by the U's unfortunate tweet. Carlos Rodon working out the kinks ahead of second year with White Sox

We're less than a week from Major League Baseball's opening day, which means the first official regular season Carlos Rodon Day is near. Rodon is trying to build on a successful rookie season that saw him win nine games and post a 3.75 ERA.

This spring, Rodon's been working on his changeup, with mixed results. His first couple of starts were good; his most recent start was terrible. While he's made strides with the fastball-change combo, it's left his slider a bit rusty, which might be the primary reason he got shelled by the Reds.

It's also a good example of why there's little point in reading into spring training statistics. There's no better time to experiment or work on deficiencies in your game, and with that, naturally, there will be setbacks.

Rodon is a little over a week away from his first regular-season start, and with luck, he will have the slider in top form by the time he toes the rubber. The White Sox open the regular season in Oakland on Monday, and Rodon's first start could come as early as Wednesday, but is more likely to be Thursday. In any case: soon, y'all.

NC GOP's Legislative overreach part of a national trend

And it's a good bet ALEC is behind it:

If St. Louis feels ill-treated by state officials, it’s got lots of company around the country. North Carolina's legislature drew national headlines when it met in special session March 23 to block cities from passing anti-discrimination protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. The legislature acted in response to Charlotte's adoption of LGBT protections earlier in the year.

What was sometimes lost in the media coverage was the fact that the new North Carolina law also blocks cities from setting their own minimum wage rates. Similarly, Birmingham, Ala., passed a minimum-wage increase last year, only to see the state block it and other cities from setting their own rates this year.

The most frustrating part of this situation is how Republicans take advantage of "otherism" to retain their abusive power base. People in rural areas hold both contempt and fear of big cities, and are not likely to share any sympathy with them when state government engages in bullying. Freedom for some, tyranny for others. The GOP's "divide and conquer" approach does work, and it works well. And this quote from Larry Shaheen tells you all you need to know about their motives:

http://ift.tt/1LYS0e1

Opening the cultural divide

The dispute over the Republican-led General Assembly’s sweeping bill to deny LGBT people protections from discrimination highlight the cultural divide in North Carolina and much of the nation. It also highlights another problem with gerrymandered districts. Republicans who passed the bill were largely pandering to their socially conservative base while driving a wedge between those […]

We should remember that NC State has Jaylen Samuels

Man, you know what we needed after the last week of news? An article about Jaylen SamuelsSo thank you for that, David Hale. Sometimes we forget that we have Jaylen Samuels, but it is important to remember--especially during difficult times--that we have Jaylen Samuels.

That piece includes a lot of great remarks from Samuels, but one statistical anecdote stood out. Over the last 10 years, only five other power-conference players have managed 500+ yards receiving, 350+ rushing, and five touchdowns both on the ground and through the air. Christian McCaffrey, De'Anthony Thomas, Randall Cobb, DeMarco Murray, Percy Harvin. And Samuels is not a good comp for any of them, which just underscores how rare he is.

There is a lot of elite speed in that group, whereas I tend to think of Samuels as getting shit done with a sledgehammer. Not that he doesn't have wheels himself. Anyway, don't think about basketball problems right now, just read that article, and then watch some JaySam highlights.

The last one is my favorite. He cuts back across the field and runs through like 97 arm tackles and then as he approaches the near sideline, dude from EKU just falls over as Samuels cuts again. Samuels is never brought down, he merely runs out of legal boundary space. In hindsight, it was somewhat cruel to subject Eastern Kentucky to Jaylen Samuels.

More questions than answers in Wake Forest shooting

Starting with the seemingly casual dismissal of a restraining order:

Last month, Sander was arrested and charged with communicating threats. It is unclear whether the Mazzellas reported it, but they were granted a temporary restraining order against Sander on the grounds that he threatened to kill them.

The Mazzellas wanted a permanent restraining order, but the temporary order was lifted Thursday by a Wake County judge, Sussman said. “The judge said it was just words,” Sussman said about the threat. “The next day he killed everyone.”

As many commenters have complained, the judge was not named in this article. And that quote above by the victims' brother/son is likely thirdhand, since he probably heard that judge's statement from one of the people who are now dead. But if that judge did lift the restraining order for any reason resembling the above quote, he needs to answer for it. If it had been still in effect, the shooter might have been taken into custody earlier in the day, when law enforcement was first called to the scene.

NC State men's swimming finishes 4th at NCAAs, wins first-ever relay title

It's been a good year for non-revenue sports at NC State, headlined by the wrestling and swimming programs. Wrestling finished 11th at the NCAAs, while the swimming programs delivered a pair of top-10 finishes. The women finished ninth, and the men were fourth overall, tying the school record for highest finish that was set in 1955.

That's four consecutive top-15 finishes for the men's team, which also earned its first-ever relay national title this year. State's group of Simonas Bilis, Ryan Held, Soren Dahl, and Andreas Schiellerup won the 400 free with a time of 2:46.81. It was the final event of the NCAAs, so that was a pretty great way to go out and finish off another outstanding year.

NC State is on pace for its best-ever finish in the Director's Cup, thanks in large part to the efforts from its non-revenue sports. The Wolfpack is currently 14th nationally, and that does not include the points it will earn from the men's swimming team's great finish.

Gene Nichol on Thom Tillis' twisted logic

Through the looking glass, indeed:

Next, Tillis argued that declining to hold hearings and vote on a nominee is, after all, an appropriate exercise of “advise and consent.” So, a Senate which flatly refused to even consider any presidential appointments – thus incapacitating the operation of two branches of government – would be carrying out its obligations rather than nullifying them. Refusing to offer advice and consent, in other words, constitutes advice and consent.

No is yes, black is white, false is true. As with Humpty Dumpty, “a word means just what (he) chooses it to mean, neither more nor less.” Of course, with Tillis, we know the methodology sweeps broader. Refusing to feed starving children, nurtures them. Denying them life-saving health care, savors their dignity. Giving massive tax cuts to millionaires secures the prosperity of the poor. Such is life through the looking glass.

So glad Professor Nichol wrote this. To be honest, I couldn't bring myself to watch the whole video, even if it was less than five minutes long. The part of me that hates to see misinformation spewed wanted to, but the other part of me that tries to avoid having an aneurysm won the debate, and I clicked that little red "X" and went on my merry way.

ACC will earn record amount of money from 2016 NCAA tournament

Football may have been the driving force behind conference realignment, but expansion has its perks for basketball too. The ACC has four teams in the Elite Eight this year, and as a result of the league's overall success in the NCAA tournament, it is set to earn almost $40 million.

Each game (or "unit") played by a team has a dollar value, and the ACC is going to finish with a record 25 units in this tourney, as ESPN's Darren Rovell explains here. The league earned almost $33 million from the 2015 NCAAs. That's a significant amount of cash, though tournament earnings are paid over a six-year window.

The $40 million earned this year is distributed to each ACC school in even shares, and assuming the league also gets a share, that means each slice is $2.5 million, or an average of roughly $400,000 annually from 2017 through 2022. And again, that's just the yield from this year. It doesn't count the payouts that have kicked in from 2015 or other NCAA tournaments prior.

So while it may be annoying to watch other league schools have success in the postseason, at least we're getting paid for enduring it. Good job, ACC teams in the NCAA touirnament! Now, please, none of you win the title.

The twisted mind of J. Peder Zane

The hate is strong with this one:

The righteous anger that poisons our national politics was turbocharged in Raleigh on June 15, 2010. That’s when protesters took over a meeting of the Wake County Board of Education, denouncing the duly elected board’s policies as “morally wrong.”

Their disruptive efforts continued through the summer, spawning the Moral Monday movement in North Carolina. Soon, the Occupy Wall Street and Black Lives Matter movements erupted nationally.

What Zane doesn't tell his readers could fill volumes. That particular Board of Education meeting was the culmination of a long, racially-tinged "crusade" partially financed by Art Pope and Bob Luddy, to overturn policies put in place to reverse trends of poverty and inequality in mostly African-American neighborhoods, and to re-institute some bent "separate but still not equal" segregated school system. Oh no, he can't tell readers that, because it would provide a sound reason for the protest that took place. What's even more alarming about Zane's point of view is not the people he feels the need to denigrate, it's the people he's proud of:

NC State recruiting Sacred Heart transfer Cane Broome

Recruiting for 2016-17 is an obvious priority for NC State, but the year after that is crucial as well. NC State is looking ahead, and has been one of the teams to contact Sacred Heart sophomore transfer Cane Broome. Broome is the reigning NEC Player of the Year.

Sacred Heart transfer Cane Broome has heard from Cincinnati, Creighton, NC State, Providence and others. NEC Player of the Year.

— Jeff Borzello (@jeffborzello) March 25, 2016

Broome will sit out this upcoming season, but will still have two years of eligibility remaining. He is a 6'0 guard who averaged 23.1 points per game this season.

The NC State staff has to plan under the assumption that Dennis Smith is a one-and-done player. That departure would/will leave a significant hole in the backcourt, and although Broome is not a pure point guard, his ability to score would help substantially to fill the void.

Broome made 53.5% of his twos this year--pretty impressive for a short guy--and shot 31.1% from three. That production came with a massive workload--he took nearly a third of the Sacred Heart's shots while he was on the floor. At a high-major program, where he would almost certainly carry a lighter load, it's a fair bet his outside shooting will improve.

Gottfried needs to absolutely nail the 2017 recruiting cycle, and I'm sure he's well aware of that. Broome would be a nice start.

Was a bit surprised that BC's quest to go completely winless in conference play didn't get a unanimous win, but they still won by a WIDE margin. I think that'll happen here, too, because seriously, what's crazier than losing 27 conference games in two sports in a single sports calendar season?

Damn, y'all - these four and five matchups in this second round are some serious doozies. Can Eddie's incredible but seriously strange praise of NC State defeat ESPN's awfully timed interruption? I think it's possible, but this one is gonna come down to the wire I'd bet.

The 3rd #goacc ToC: Officiating Second Round

The best of the best (worst?) have been selected after a rigorous process by the selection committee. Now it's up to you to help determine the #goacc champion of the season.

Now let's take a look at what happened in the Officiating Regional's opening round. A couple of really close votes, featuring one particularly big upset by another ten seed, but for the most part there was a lot of chalk in this region. Let's see if that trend holds for the second round! A straight chalk matchup here, but sorry, Nien Numb. You should probably worry more about helping the Resistance against the First Order these days than spend anymore time wishing your tweet makes it past this opponent. There's just no way there's going to be an upset here that I can see.

Oh man, what a tough call here. While I thought this was Beamer's strongest entry in the field, based on the number of you that voted for the 5 seed here, I could easily see an upset. We'll see, but I bet this one will be SUPER close.

Moving on to the Amazing Regional, some facts about the first round: this regional featured some MUCH closer matchups, with one escaping by literally a couple of votes. Beamer, our favorite #goacc legend, escaped the first round by literally 1 vote. That's it. Whenever he needs a win, he just pulls the magic out of his hat, apparently. Will he be able to continue that magic here in the second round? This is a strong four seed he's up against...I'm not sure he can pull this one off, but if there's one thing I've learned...never doubt Frank Beamer's #goacc prowess.

Coach K had no issues dispatching his foe in the first round with his "Amazing" performance. The six seed here also featured a really strong first round victory, so this should be a close one, right? Wrong. I feel like Coach K is going to blow out Miami here. Shame the U got slotted here, felt like this entry could make a bit of a deeper run.

NC State basketball: A glance at the roster next season

The Martin twins are gone. Abdul-Malik Abu is in the NBA Draft, at least for the time being. Abu should be back next season, but this still leaves a roster a bit of a mess. NC State should be okay at the guard spots, but it is in desperate need of an effective forward as complement, especially if Lennard Freeman ends up redshirting this year.

Per the N&O's Joe Giglio, that redshirt is possible. Freeman had surgery last offseason to address a fracture in his lower right leg, and that did not entirely fix the problem. He needs more surgery this offseason. And that stinks because I feel like Lennard could have been a fast learner without these setbacks. I'm not sure we have a smarter player on the team.

I'm gonna approach this under the assumptions that Abu returns and Freeman sits. That leaves the` current roster looking like this:

1: Dennis Smith / Terry Henderson / Torin Dorn
2. Terry Henderson / Torin Dorn / Maverick Rowan
3: Torin Dorn / Maverick Rowan / Terry Henderson / Shaun Kirk
4: Abdul-Malik Abu / [Mystery Guest]
5. BeeJay Anya / [Mystery Guest]

NC State will make an addition to its frontcourt over the next few months, and as more teams exit the NCAA tournament, the field of candidates will expand. The lingering question regards the quality of said Mystery Guest. If it happens to be Omer Yurtseven, then State is in business. There also are several graduate transfer options that could pay off. It wouldn't take a lot to flip this entire discussion from pessimism to excitement.

But that depends on how the next couple months unfold. There is a lot to watch, and a few things to worry about, but that's every offseason nowadays, apparently.

Abdul-Malik Abu declares for NBA Draft, will not hire an agent

Sure, let's keep the alarming news coming, why don't we? Hours after NC State announced that Caleb and Cody Martin will transfer, the school confirmed that Abdul-Malik Abu is going to enter the NBA Draft. ESPN's Jeff Goodman was the first to report the news.

It only makes sense for Abu to get feedback from NBA scouts, and thanks to some rules changes by the NCAA, he's got more than two months to make up his mind, though he shouldn't need that much time. Players can now participate in the NBA Combine without losing their eligibility, and have until May 25 to remove their name from the draft.

Abu is not going to hire an agent, which obviously leaves the door open for a return to NC State if he doesn't like what he hears. Most likely, Abu will be back at NC State for his junior season. Most likely. He's not in Draft Express' mock draft, which is probably an accurate representation of where he stands.

But you never know, man, especially around these parts.

Spoke with Mark Gottfried about Abu's decision: "With the new rules, it’s something he wants to take advantage of."

Sophomore wings Cody and Caleb Martin will transfer from NC State

Someday, perhaps, we'll have an offseason without a gut-punch in the form of roster attrition, but alas, this is not that offseason. Twins Cody and Caleb Martin announced Thursday that they've decided to transfer from NC State. Because this past regular season wasn't demoralizing enough!

Here's the statement from Mark Gottfried on this news:

"Through a series of honest, thoughtful and somewhat surprising conversations we have had in the days since our season ended, Caleb and Cody have informed me of their desire to explore options that they believe are in both of their best interest," said NC State head coach Mark Gottfried. "While I don't share all of their views, I have certainly come to understand and respect the unique dynamic and special bond that exists between identical twins, especially when they play the same sport for the same team. I enjoyed coaching them over the past two years."

Normally I don't feel stabbing pain all over unless I'm watching an actual game, but that good ol' feeling is back again in a surprise I super did not want. Thanks a lot, basketball team, thanks a lot.

I suppose the driving force behind these transfers could be playing time, since the Wolfpack will have more options on the wing with Torin Dorn, Maverick Rowan, Terry Henderson, and (perhaps) Shaun Kirk. But we know Cody can play in several different spots, and it's hard to imagine that Caleb and his shooting ability wouldn't find a spot in the rotation.

I just don't get it. Maybe there's something else going on in this case.

We might weather this okay in 2016-17, but after that, the roster situation looks really dicey for Gottfried. Eventually the attrition rate of his program will be the end of him in Raleigh if he can't figure out a way to halt this trend. But we can worry about the larger picture later. In the here and now, for next season, Gottfried has plenty of work to do still.

The Gang of 11

It’s possible people aren’t aware of this yet, but there was a law passed by the General Assembly in a special session yesterday that has generated some controversy. Bathroom bill could signal the death of NC's film industry

Pay close attention to what's happening in Georgia:

“Disney and Marvel are inclusive companies, and although we have had great experiences filming in Georgia, we will plan to take our business elsewhere should any legislation allowing discriminatory practices be signed into state law,” the Disney Co. said in a statement.

One of the main reasons the Charlotte ordinance advanced was because hotels and other establishments were actively discriminating against LGBT folks, and state law was woefully inadequate to correct that problem. And thanks to the blatant overreach by pandering lawmakers with this new bill's language, protections are even worse now, if they exist at all. After what happened yesterday, including McCrory's blindingly fast signature, when the film companies are looking at alternate sites for their Georgia productions, they will strike North Carolina off the list entirely.

Dayton extends Archie Miller's contract through 2023

Give Dayton credit, they're being as proactive as possible. They'll lose Archie Miller eventually, but they've shown a willingness to counter interest from other schools, which should at least postpone the departure date a while. Miller and Dayton have agreed to a contract extension through the 2023 season; it's the third year in a row they've come to terms on an extension.

This is also the third straight year Dayton's been to the NCAAs. In 2014 and 2015, the Flyers were an 11-seed, but they improved to a 7-seed this season. Incidentally, this year's team was the worst of that bunch, and they also happened to get dismantled in the first round. An Elite Eight run in 2014 helps balance that out, though.

Archie and his brother Sean both quickly became the source of rumors after Jamie Dixon left Pittsburgh for TCU. Sean Miller has already released a statement denying any interest in the Pitt job (Pitt's his alma mater), and Archie's extension with Dayton says basically the same thing.

Archie is playing this game well. Like Shaka Smart, he seems to be waiting for the best possible situation. Pittsburgh wasn't gonna make that cut. And now he can wait all the way to 2023 for that opportunity, if he needs to. (He won't need to.)

NC State basketball recruiting: Who is Omer Yurtseven?

NC State's recruiting efforts should begin to intensify now that the team's season is over, and the coaching staff may be starting with Turkish seven-footer Omer Yurtseven, who is a projected lottery pick in the 2017 NBA Draft. Yurtseven said in February that he's planning to attend college because he wants to get more playing time--whether or not he actually decides to pass on a pro contract in Europe remains to be seen.

He is a consensus five-star prospect, per 247Sports, and a top-20 recruit in the 2016 class. In other words, probably an instant impact player. His potential addition could make NC State's frontcourt formidable, especially if Abdul-Malik Abu continues to build on the way he finished out his sophomore season.

State has definitely been in contact with Yurtseven, but a talented kid like this--available late in the recruiting cycle--obviously is going to get a lot of attention. Arizona, Duke, UNC, and Kentucky are among the other schools that have been in contact.

He's planning to visit the schools that he's interested in, but he has to wait until the conclusion of his Turkish club team's season to begin that process. So it's unclear what sort of timetable we might be looking at here.

Mike Rose, T.J. Graham impress at NC State's pro day

NC State held its pro day earlier in the week, and several Wolfpack players took the opportunity to work out in front of a bunch of NFL scouts. Jacoby Brissett, Shadrach Thornton, Mike Rose, and David Grinnage were among the players from the 2015 Wolfpack team to workout. Former State wide receiver T.J. Graham also took part in some drills as he tries to solidify another opportunity in the NFL.

Rose, who for whatever reason did not get invited to the NFL Combine, finally had his chance to show off his talents in front of scouts, and it went pretty well for him. Per Tony Pauline of DraftInsider.net, Rose ran a solid 4.66 40-yard dash (that's faster than Shad!) and did a lot of linebacker drills. Rose met with a half dozen teams, including the Broncos and Chargers.

Graham, not surprisingly, impressed with his speed. Pauline again:

Former NFL receiver and Wolfpack alum T.J. Graham, who last played with the Buffalo Bills, worked out for scouts yesterday and ran 4.3 seconds in the 40. I'm told during passing drills quarterback Jacoby Brissett tried to impress with his arm strength by purposely overthrowing Graham to no avail, as the speedy receiver quickly ran down the ball.

Graham appeared in only four games with the Saints in 2015, making four receptions for 24 yards.

Veil of secrecy surrounds Special Session bill

Another undemocratic pop-quiz for lawmakers to guess at:

Andy Munn, a spokesman for Moore, declined to provide a copy of the draft legislation and said it probably wouldn’t be made public until Wednesday – hours before it comes to a first vote. “There are still a few tweaks to be made to it,” he said. Munn wouldn’t provide details of the proposal under consideration.

House Minority Leader Larry Hall, a Durham Democrat, called on Moore to release the bill so legislators can consider what they’ll be voting on Wednesday. “We’re playing hide-and-seek democracy here,” Hall told The News & Observer Tuesday afternoon. “We don’t know what we’re discussing here, we don’t know what we’re voting on. What we’re doing is a perversion of the process.”

This observation might seem a little on the "obvious" side, but apparently the defining principles of our form of government need to be re-iterated: Citizens of a democracy expect their government to be "deliberative" in nature, which requires a frank discussion about prospective policies before a decision is arrived at by each individual, and a vote is taken. Efforts to conceal the elements of a new policy proposal and then force a quick vote are the behaviors of a tyrannical regime, not a legitimate representative government. And the Republicans that take part in this sham should be ashamed of themselves, and replaced by someone more worthy.

Jordan Lake allocations: Prelude to the water wars?

Get it while you can:

The state is asking the public to weigh in on how Jordan Lake's water will be divvied up for the next 30 years.

Jordan Lake can supply about a 100 million gallons of drinking water a day. Right now, Triangle communities are sucking up 63 percent of that supply. But the region is growing, and a draft recommendation from the Division of Water Resources would allocate about 96 percent of the supply by 2045.

I wonder if anybody at DWQ has factored in how much hydraulic fracturing would demand once we start playing that dangerous game? They're probably avoiding that consideration right now, but somebody needs to look at it. Most people are (now) aware that each fracked well consumes 4-5 million gallons of fresh water, but that pales in comparison when you look at regional annual usage:

Cat Barber is staying in NBA Draft, will not return to NC State

We've known for a while now that Cat Barber was going to at least test his NBA Draft prospects once the season ended, but we couldn't say for certain that he was definitely going pro. Now we know. On Tuesday, via Pack Pride, Cat Barber confirmed that he will stay in the draft.

Barber sent this text to Pack Pride:

"I feel like it's time for me to move on and take my game to the next level. I want to be able to provide for my family. I enjoyed my time at NC State. I want to thank my coaches for giving me the opportunity. Most importantly I want to thank my teammates and the fans. I want everyone to know I gave it 100% every night. I will forever be a part of WPN."

Barber appeared to offer a farewell on Instagram yesterday (h/t @Bullard_), so this is not a surprising development. He could have waited quite a while to make a decision--new NCAA legislation allows players to try out at the NBA Combine in May and still maintain their eligibility, so guys have more time than ever to collect information. But when you know, you know, and the Cat Daddy has known for a while, I'd imagine.

He went out with a huge season. He has nothing left to show scouts at this point in his career, and that leaves little reason for him to return to NC State, even if he is far from a clear first-round draft pick.

In the latest 2016 mock draft from Draft Express, Barber sneaks in at the tail end of the second round. I think there's a decent chance he can improve his stock in workouts, and in any case, he's definitely going to get his shot.

Thanks for these past three seasons, Cat. Go get paid, dude.

I’m still running

I’m still running for Congress in North Carolina’s 8th Congressional District. I announced my candidacy three months ago when the district looked different because I couldn’t find anybody else to run. Now, I’m staying in the race because I have something to say and because I believe I’m the best candidate to represent the district. […]

Governor’s Re-election Won’t Be That Easy

Three hours after John Davis released his optimistic column on Governor McCrory’s re-election chances, based mostly on the successful passage of the $2 billion bond issue on March 15, I wrote John to let him know that I agreed that he had made a powerful argument in McCrory’s favor. Like Thomas Mills, I often agree […]

Tuesday Twitter roundup

If the voters learn nothing else from this "special" session:

Should have an airhorn blast at the #NCGA anytime a GOP legislator says some iteration of "smaller government" after this session. #ncpol

Unfortunately, as I've mentioned a few times before, Tea Party types are either silent when it comes to government punishing/oppressing citizens of which they don't approve, or are actively involved in such treatment. Liberty for some, tyranny for the rest. Hypocrisy has no better home than in a patriotic nationalist's mouth.

NC State's Mt. Rushmore of athletics: Who ya got?

This has become a topic of discussion over the last couple of days, in the aftermath of Nick Gwiazdowski's final match. Which NC State athletes or coaches should exist on a theoretical NC State Mt. Rushmore? Sure it's not real important, but what else do we have to do, work?

I figure there's two ways to confront this question. Everett Case and David Thompson are in. They are in for their impact on both basketball in general and NC State specifically. Case made basketball a big deal in North Carolina. DT jumped to the moon and won a national title along the way. His is the school's only retired basketball jersey for a reason.

How best to approach this question, though?

I figure you can go with your standard pretend Rushmore, which has four spots and must include Case and DT, and then you can take your picks from there. Gwiz? Kay Yow? V? These are great options. There are a lot of other fantastic options as well, which the NC State hall of fame has helped us better understand.

The other way to consider this Mt. Rushmore question? Maybe there's only room for Case and David Thompson. Maybe it's more of a replica of that famous mountain. Maybe there are two people who are so much mountain that they leave no more mountain for anybody else.

Admittedly this is exclusive and it's by default unfair, but it's just so hard to weigh the impacts of anybody else, to make relative what a guy in football or wrestling or swimming or cross country contributed compared to what Case and DT meant for State. I kinda prefer this option, but that's probably because I've been staring up at that red 44 for two decades.

How would you lay out this whole pretend mountainside?

Jamie Dixon leaving Pittsburgh for TCU job, per reports

This offseason will have some local intrigue. Jamie Dixon decided to hit the eject button at Pittsburgh and is headed for TCU, per ESPN's Jeff Goodman. This is a fantastic hire for TCU, on par with Buzz Williams deciding to leave Marquette for Virginia Tech. But what does it mean for Pitt, and the ACC, more generally?

The Dixon-to-TCU rumor has been a thing for several days, and in fact may have been a foregone conclusion. I've seen a lot of Pitt fans treating it as such. Plus, there's this ...

New administration at Pittsburgh was fine with the fact that Dixon is leaving for TCU, sources told ESPN.

— Jeff Goodman (@GoodmanESPN) March 21, 2016

Sometimes things get stale, no matter how good or how consistent you've been as a head coach.

The Millers are going to come up in this coaching search. Both Sean and Archie. Sean is a Pitt alumnus, and Archie has had obvious success right down the road. How good is the Pitt job, exactly? We really don't know, because between Ben Howland and Jamie Dixon they've had continuity for like two decades without a genuine coaching search.

So how does Pitt handle this coaching change, and where do the Millers fall into the equation? Sean Miller has already eschewed both NC State and Maryland for Arizona. Sean Miller is not leaving Arizona for Pittsburgh. I don't think Archie Miller is going to take that job, either. This will be interesting, though, no doubt.

March Madness as illness: Northern Iowa's weekend in extremes

If there's one thing the NCAA tournament teaches us, it's that basketball is cruelty by appointment for nearly everybody, and we're all clamoring to sign up for the opportunity. We got a great opening weekend, which means that there were great finishes and buzzer beaters, equal parts joy and sadness. And a team that spiked impossibly at both ends of the spectrum in a span of two days. That's Northern Iowa.

This is how the Panthers beat Texas on Friday:

That is ridiculous. I mean, shut up, basketball, you're being stupid.

If Paul Jesperson doesn't make that shot, Northern Iowa might still win in overtime. Maybe the Panthers handle things in mundane fashion (by comparison, nearly anything would have appeared mundane) in the extra period. But he did make that shot, which made him responsible for one of the more memorable finishes in the tournament of the last few years.

If the Panthers win that game in more routine fashion, I'm probably not still thinking about their weekend.

There are 67 teams in the tournament on borrowed time, duration undetermined, and one win gets you another couple days, which is always a good thing in the moment. Not much beats the satisfaction of that first tournament win. We're alive! Fate unknown! Possibilities endless!

And oh god WHAT DID WE DO TO OURSELVES

This is how you erase a 12-point deficit in 35 seconds. https://t.co/l3eJ83wDDB #MarchMadness

— NCAA March Madness (@marchmadness) March 21, 2016

I SAID QUIT DOING THAT, BASKETBALL.

The cruelty of the tourney is that you can pull one out by the skin of your teeth one day, then have history drop a Steinway on you 48 hours later. Northern Iowa advanced in the first round with a half-court buzzer-beater, and then Northern Iowa authored the worst final-minute collapse in recorded college basketball history. How do you attempt to reconcile these things, or even approach coming to terms with them?

I'm an impartial observer and I'm having basketball pains over this. I know which game that team will remember the most, though, I know that for sure. But do you trade the experience of winning in that fashion for never having to endure a more terrible ending? Heck no. Never. Even when you test the limits like Northern Iowa did this weekend.

The tournament promises some fun, but it might (probably) hurt too. And on that note, congratulations, Northern Iowa, and I'm very sorry.

Tea Party Brannon Running in NC-02

It seems that no matter how the district is drawn, North Carolina’s Second Congressional District is bound to attract an interesting contest. This morning, the Tea Party’s Greg Brannon filed to run in the redrawn 2nd, which already featured an incumbent-on-incumbent battle (Renee Ellmers vs. George Holding). The impatience of bigotry: Special Session begins in 5, 4, 3...

When 3/5 of your elected officials are scared of their own shadow:

According to NC Speaker of the House Tim Moore, legislators could call a special session this week. He said the House has met the state requirement of a three-fifths majority. Now they're just waiting on the Senate.

Lawmakers are upset over a portion of the ordinance, which will allow transgender people to use whichever bathroom they prefer in public places.

And the Senate has already empaneled a special committee to "strategize" about the best way to meddle in Charlotte's affairs. It's somewhere between sad and contemptible when your first order of business is to strip away the rights of others, but that's the government we allowed to take power. On a personal note, I have a request: Please stop referring to Caitlyn Jenner in clever commentary about the "unintended consequences" of this GOP position. It only serves to highlight how "revolting" standing beside her in the bathroom would be for many of these folks, and regardless of her media spectacle and Jenner family dysfunction, it doesn't make it "okay" to use her gender identification in a negative fashion.

NC State wrestling, women's swimming finish in top 15 at NCAA championships

Overall it was a good weekend for NC State's non-revenue sports, though it wasn't without a little disappointment. The NC State wrestling team entered the NCAAs with big aspirations after a dominant season in duals, but ended up falling well short of contending for the team national title. They finished 11th.

That's still very good! It's a testament to what Pat Popolizio has done with the program that this feels even the slightest bit disappointing. State has improved its finish at nationals in each of the last three seasons. Three wrestlers earned All-America honors this year.

The most notable event of the weekend for wrestling was the heavyweight title match between two-time champ Nick Gwiazdowski and Ohio State's Kyle Snyder. It was a tremendous bout (even to this layman's eyes), and Gwiz had the edge in the late stages before a last-minute takedown by Snyder tied the score and forced overtime. Snyder scored a takedown in OT to win the title.

Gwiz was less than a minute from a third consecutive national championship, but he'll have to settle for just two of them, and three ACC titles. His streak of 88 consecutive victories will go down as one of the greatest runs by any athlete in any sport at NC State. What an insane career that dude had.

---------

The general tenor was a bit different for women's swimming, which finished ninth at NCAAs. That's the ladies' highest finish since 1982. It's also a significant improvement over their 17th-place finish in 2015. They broke a half-dozen school records on the way to that top-10 finish.

While they haven't quite been the breakthrough success of the men's swimming team, the rise of the women's team to challenge at the top of the ACC and compete nationally has been every bit as impressive. Five years ago this all would have been a pipe dream.

The back-to-back ACC champion men's team will begin competition at NCAAs on March 23.

NC State baseball takes series; softball takes a turn for the worst

Baseball is apparently a game of runs. State had stretches where it outscored Notre Dame 9-0 and 10-0 over the weekend, while the Irish strung together 13 unanswered runs between the end of game two and beginning of game three.

NC State's denizens of the diamond, the Pack Nine baseball club and women's softball, perhaps hit rock bottom on Sunday. One team swung their way off the mat with a vengeance while the other suffered the ignominious fate of becoming Bryant University's lone win in 21 tries.

Fresh off blowing a four-run lead Saturday to an at best middling Notre Dame club, the Pack Nine spotted the Irish five runs in the series rubber match. A loss would've dropped the Pack to 2-4 in the ACC with a veritable who's who of top 25 opponents remaining on the conference slate. Alas, the boys not only rallied, they sent the Irish packing early to catch a flight home with a 16-6, eight-inning win. Notre Dame was not run-ruled, but rather had a Sunday travel curfew to meet, so it called it quits early and made for South Bend with its little leprechaun tail between its little leprechaun legs.

(Do leprechauns have tails? If not, please read the above figuratively.)

Elliot Avent shook things up after State's disappointing game two loss, starting Evan Mendoza at short in favor of Joe Dunand. That didn't work out so well, as Mendoza's error opened the floodgates for four unearned runs in the top of the second. A passed ball from Chance Shepard plated a fifth unearned run in the following inning, and an invigorated Irish danced to a 5-0 advantage.

But, thanks in part to some generous free passages from Irish starter Scott Tully, who walked Josh McLain and Xavier LeGrant to open the frame, the Pack got it all back in the bottom of the third. It was 5-1 with two outs when Shepard singled in a run, Stephen Pitarra put runners on first and second with a hit, and Mendoza walked to load the sacks. The clutch, two-out workmanship continued when Preston Palmeiro unloaded the bases with a game-tying double down the right field line.

After the teams traded runs, it was all NC State. The Pack scored 10 unanswered down the stretch to take the series and remove the bitter taste of having at one point been outscored 13-0 over parts of game two and three.

One shakeup that paid off was the insertion of diminutive second sacker Pitarra in the cleanup spot. The 168-pound sophomore went 4-for-5, scored four times, and drove in a pair. Pitarra upped his average to a team-best .393. He's made just one error in 64 chances and struck out just five times in 61 plate appearances. Pitarra should be a fixture at the pivot, if not the cleanup spot, for a long time.

Ryan Williamson, a midweek starter thus far, likely wrestled a weekend job away from Johnny Piedmonte in the win. Though all were unearned, Piedmonte was tagged for five runs in two-plus innings and remains winless in three starts. Williamson, who allowed just a run in five innings while fanning seven, moved to 4-0 when he picked up the win in his first relief appearance of the season. He's striking out 12.6 batters per nine innings.

Austin Staley struck out the side in the eighth as the Irish were getting their gear together.

NC State's softball team needs to get its shit together (pardon the bad language and segue). The ladies have hosted back-to-back tournaments with such luminaries as Delaware State, Loyola Chicago, Northern Illinois, Ohio, Bryant, and IUPUI visiting Raleigh. Rather than devouring this cast of cupcakes, they have posted a 5-5 combined record in the two tournaments. The underwhelming performance culminated in an 8-5 loss to previously winless Bryant on Sunday morning.

Shawn Rychcik has put together a good offense, the team is slashing a solid .279/.361/.472, but Courtney Mirabella (9-6, 4.12 ERA) has been inconsistent as the staff "ace," and there's not much help behind her. Brittany Nimmo has allowed 49 baserunners in 25 innings, while Harli Hubbard has seen an astronomical 129 in 49.2, or NEARLY THREE PER INNING.

Enter Meredith Burroughs, first basewoman. Position players Burroughs and Maggie Hawkins both took to the circle after Mirabella and Hubbard got torched in Saturday's 8-4 loss to IUPUI (that's Indiana University Purdue University at Indianapolis for long). Hawkins walked four and allowed a run in her inning, but Burroughs went three shutout frames, allowing nary a free pass and just a lone hit. Naturally, that made her the starter the following day against Bryant.

Burroughs pitched admirably into the seventh, entering the final frame with a 4-3 advantage and all three runs she allowed were unearned. But, as they're wont to do, the wheels came off for a Wolfpack entity leading late in a game. It went walk-walk-HR-walk-sac bunt-HR, and, just like that, the moribund Lady Bulldogs of Bryant enjoyed an 8-4 lead. I am really without a clue as to why Burroughs wasn't lifted at the first sign of trouble. (Maybe she was the best option...even after the five-run inning Burroughs leads the team with a 3.75 ERA!)

The Pack scratched in the bottom of the frame on a Hawkins RBI single to get to 8-5, but Hanna Sommer struck out swinging with the sacks drunk to end the game.

At 15-14, a fourth straight trip to the NCAA tournament appears exceedingly unlikely. At least the box score found some humor in the situation; under the "Weather" entry, it listed game conditions as "Return of winter, 43 degrees."

Up next: Baseball begins a string of eight straight away from home with a Tuesday tilt at UNC-Wilmington. Softball hosts East Carolina, also on Tuesday.

Duke Energy pushing its "cap and leak" plan vigorously

And contaminating the editorial pages in the process:

Both capping and excavation closure approaches provide similar benefits to groundwater, and a spectrum of options is available to enhance its protection if needed. Excavation is not necessary to protect groundwater, though it may be selected for other technical reasons.

This drives us to look at solutions from both a statewide perspective and from the perspective of the individual community. In many respects, closing basins on plant property with a protective cap better protects the local and broader environment.

There's no doubt the whole purpose of this science-deprived sales pitch was to soften people up to prepare them for what is to come; the majority of leaking coal ash ponds are merely going to be capped in place. This also explains the DEQ's flip-flop back in late 2015 to classify most sites as "low-risk." If we lived in a two-dimensional world, it might work. But we don't, and groundwater easily penetrates the sides of an unlined landfill, and carries those contaminants with it into streams, lakes, and groundwater aquifers. Just ask the people in this Montana township if you're still skeptical:

McCrory's twisted logic in Coal Ash Commission disbandment

A wild interpretation of what the Supremes already interpreted:

The McCrory administration, however, says that since the appointments provision in the 2014 law that created the commission was found to be unconstitutional, then the commission itself is unconstitutional.

“It was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court,” spokesman Graham Wilson said in an email Friday. “It, therefore, no longer existed and could conduct no work. You don’t have to ‘disband’ an entity that no longer exists.”

None of the complaints levied by the administration in the run-up to this decision declared the Commission wasn't needed. It all had to do with appointments. And the creation of boards and commissions is a Legislative function, not Executive. So in your zeal to "declare total victory" or whatever the hell you're doing, you've gone from one branch's overreach to another branch's overreach. A fine example of why neither of those branches should be controlled by Republicans.
