NC State and South Carolina have an agreement in place to open the 2017 football season in Charlotte, per a report from Joe Giglio of the News and Observer. The Pack's 2017 non-conference schedule had already been full, so in order to accommodate the Gamecocks, they're going to reschedule their game against Troy.
The Troy game had to be the one to go, because it is a road game. NC State was not going to drop home a game (read = very important $$$$$) against Furman or Marshall for a neutral-site game. The issue is where to move that Troy contest since the Pack does not have an open date until 2020 at the earliest. But I don't think any NC State fans would mind if that road trip were pushed back into eternity.
As for the new game on the slate, it's a pretty obvious win for Charlotte given the proximity of the two schools to that neutral site. (Then again, who knows where these programs will be at that point.) I'm a big fan of these neutral-site contests, and obviously this one represents a significant upgrade to the Pack's schedule.
The schedule is well-balanced now, with the mid-major home games, plus the theoretically winnable Sakerlina game, and the probably not-so-winnable road game at Notre Dame. Lookin' forward to it.
