Dereck Whittenburg promoted, leaving NC State basketball coaching staff

Dereck Whittenburg has been promoted to a new position within the NC State athletics department, effective immediately, the school announced Friday. Whittenburg, who'd been an assistant to Mark Gottfried since 2013, is NC State's new Associate Athletic Director for Community Relations and Student Support.

As NC State put it in their release, Whitt will serve as an "advocate and ambassador" for the athletics department. It is a brand new position. Here's Whitt's statement on the career change:

"The legacy of NC State University is such a rich and progressive hub of academic and athletic excellence," said Whittenburg." "The privilege of playing here and now working here to service our students, administration, alumni and the greater community is one of the greatest honors of my career. My wife Jacqueline and I are excited and are grateful to Chancellor Randy Woodson and Athletic Director Debbie Yow for their collective confidence in affording me this historic opportunity."

With this move, Whittenburg is no longer a member of Mark Gottfried's staff, which is to say that the men's basketball team now has a coaching vacancy. That could lead to some promotions from within the current group--maybe some raises/new titles--but in any case, the Wolfpack likely will be bringing in someone new.

Under Gottfried, Whitt served as director of player development and was the "senior assistant to the head coach." So it would make sense if NC State were to search for someone to serve in a player development capacity, but again, there are moving parts here, so we'll just have to wait and see.
