Hello all, I bring basketball news that safely qualifies as "not bad." In an offseason that has begun with a steady stream of unfortunate awfulness, the Pack could once again add some players late in the cycle and help themselves out for next year.
Obviously, next year’s outlook depends a great deal on the decisions made by rising junior forward Abdul Malik-Abu. He is the most important "recruit" in play. Even if he returns though, State could be looking at a situation where they only have two post players to work with, depending on the health of Lennard Freeman. Adding another post player is a must regardless. The search for a late addition tall person has zeroed in on a new name and the interest from both sides appears to be very legitimate. Enter Gibson Johnson, 6’8 power forward from Salt Lake Community College.

It was reported around a week ago that State was one of the schools recruiting the JUCO sophomore. Johnson will be officially visiting Raleigh soon and it would be hard to imagine him turning down the Pack for the other schools on his list if State decides they want him .The Pack’s top competition for his services is Hawaii, which Johnson visited recently and very much enjoyed.
Hawaii is not eligible for next year’s NCAA Tournament.
Johnson contributed for SLCC during his freshman campaign, averaging 6.9 PPG and 5.8 RPG in about 19 minutes. Despite only shooting 46% from the field, the forward was 44% from beyond the arc and 76% from the line. His usage went up during his sophomore year, when he averaged 12 and 5.6. His three-point percentage dropped to 29% and his free throw percentage fell to 65%, but his overall field goal percentage rose to 55% during his sophomore campaign. His full stats can be found here. The Pack is also set to receive a visit from Canadian-based guard Tyrell Gumbs-Frater. Gumbs-Frater has good height at 6’4 and can knock down perimeter jumpshots. He’s also a good athlete as you can see from his fancy dunks below. The Spire Institute guard is expected to be in Raleigh May 10th. Some of the offers that Gumbs-Frater has claimed include Kansas State and a few other smaller schools.

As of now, State appears to be proceeding with the recruitment of late blooming small forward Antwan Walker, whom they recently offered.
