Clemson scored a meaningless touchdown late, failing to convert the two-point conversion, and lost at home to NC State 20-9. Wait...what's that? Oh it was a baseball game? Well that makes the 20 on the scoreboard all the more impressive. In fact, the Pack led 20-1 at one point en route to evening the series 1-1 against the pitching poor Tigers at whatever they call the baseball equivalent to Death Valley.
Four of six Clemson (30-16, 12-14) pitchers were tagged for at least three earned runs in State's 21-hit, eight-walk attack. The Pack (32-13, 13-8) saw every starter collect at least two hits save for Brock Deatherage (and he had one). Sometimes it's too hard to pick a star so you just link to the DAYUM! box score.
Brian Brown's line (five runs, three earned in 6.1 innings) doesn't look overly impressive, but he was cruising until his mates staked him to a 19-run lead. We can forgive him if he was a little rusty after having had to go out not once but twice after the Pack had batted around. He improved to 7-1 on the season.
Perhaps the most promising development in the game was super scholar Andrew Knizner's reemergence at the plate. Dropped to ninth in the order and in a prolonged slump, the engineering major delivered a 3-for-5 performance with two runs scored and two batted in.
Evan Mendoza went 2-for-3, extending his hitting streak to 19 games. He also drew three walks, scored three times, and drove in two. He's hitting a robust .381, but, alas, he made a pair of errors in the game.
Ryan Williamson will try to move to 8-1 and pitch the Pack to their fifth consecutive ACC series win in the rubber match Sunday at 1 p.m. The game will be available for streaming on Watch ESPN, The Ocho, ESPN3, or whatever it's called.
