As a graduate transfer, Finley is eligible to play immediately.
The battle to see who will replace Jacoby Brissett at quarterback just got a little more interesting. NC State has added Boise State graduate transfer Ryan Finley. Unlike most graduate transfers, Finley has at least two more seasons of eligibility and potentially a third through a medical hardship considering he missed all but three games a year ago with a broken ankle.
Finley was the Broncos' starter under new NC State offensive coordinator Eli Drinkwitz before his injury and credited his OC for helping him get through the difficulty of getting sidelined so shortly after having claimed the job. "I was real close with Drink," he told the Idaho Press, and that's something we can all relate to.
The 6-4, 200-pounder certainly has prototypical QB size. He was off to a solid start in terms of completion percentage (65.7) last year but threw just one TD to four INTs before going down.
Finley is not a traditional "dual threat" QB like Dave Doeren seems to favor; he rushed for just 42 yards on 22 (not sack-adjusted) carries (1.9 per attempt) last year. Still, he may have a leg up on the competition due to his experience in Drinkwitz's system.
Finley, who was a three-star recruit of out of Paradise Valley High in Phoenix, will compete with redshirt sophomore Jalan McClendon and redshirt freshman Jakobi Meyers for the lead role in the offense.
