While Week 1 was marred by some lapses on the defensive side that allowed NC State's opponent some big plays, the defense responded with a dominant performance against Eastern Kentucky. The Colonels don't have much in the way of a passing game, and that weakness was especially crippling on Saturday.
EKU starter Bennie Coney finished a horrific 5-19 throwing the ball, so with nothing there to scare the Wolfpack, the Colonels never had much hope of getting their ground game going. Talented running back Dy'Shawn Mobley managed only 32 yards on seven carries, with a long of 11 yards. (That was EKU's longest running play, too.) He can't be an afterthought if EKU is going to be successful. Credit to State's defensive front for making him irrelevant.
NC State held the opposing offense under 50 plays for the second consecutive week, and at least in terms of total reps, the Pack has one of the most well-rested defensive units in the country. Among the FBS teams that have played two games, only one has seen fewer defensive snaps -- Boston College (89). NC State's defense has been on the field for 90 plays.
On the offensive side, another efficient night from Jacoby Brissett has him in some rarefied air. His 84.4 completion percentage leads all FBS quarterbacks, and he ranks 26th in yards per attempt (9.2) and 12th in passer rating (183.35).
The emergence of Jumichael Ramos as Brissett's favorite target has been an encouraging development for the passing game, and it's got Ramos on pace for about 850 receiving yards this season. If he were to hit that mark, it'd be the most yardage by a Wolfpack wide receiver since Owen Spencer finished with 912 yards in 2010.
