Dave Doeren spoke to media members Wednesday during the ACC's weekly coaches' teleconference and addressed a few different topics, including his thoughts on the Pack's performance against Eastern Kentucky and what lies ahead at Old Dominion. The full transcript is here.
He went into some detail about the changes to Old Dominion's offense, which is now far more run-oriented after the graduation of long-time starting quarterback Taylor Heinicke. Doeren described an ODU running game that has kept it simple (much like NC State's) up to this point:
It's just they block, really two runs, really three, if you count their stretch which isn't a huge part of their offense. They run inside zone, and they give movement and he finds his space and runs through contact and do a nice job with it. And when they do it, they have pass plays on the outside. So they are run blocking guys down the field and throwing the ball, which is what happens now in college football, and the NFL, really.
Making those throws to the perimeter a credible threat might be crucial to Old Dominion's success, since the Monarchs may be averse to letting their freshman quarterback take too many chances down the field. If they're boxed in to a point where they have to go downfield more than they'd otherwise prefer, they are going to find some trouble.
Doeren was also asked about Johnny Frasier:
Johnny's doing good. He's rehabbing an ankle that he sprained during camp, and came in and competed hard. He's going to be red-shirt player for us, missed a lot of practice. He's almost full-go now where he can get back in on scout teams. He's a great young man, works hard. I know everybody loves his personality and cares a lot about him here.
So if there were any question about it, Frasier is definitely redshirting. Cracking the rotation with just a few weeks of camp to learn the offense is hard enough, and that ankle injury sealed his fate. If he takes advantage of his redshirt year, no doubt he has the talent to work his way near the top of the depth chart in 2016.
