Wow, that was quite a week of football. Not a great deal has changed in the second week of the power rankings, except Louisville fell off a cliff. We should be learning a lot more about each team in the near future.
1. Georgia Tech (Tulane W 65-10)
The Yellow Jackets steamrolled another cupcake this weekend in the Tulane Green Wave. They more than doubled Tulane in total yardage and still look like the best team in the ACC.
2. Clemson (App St W 41-10)
Clemson used a 28 point second quarter to seize total control of this game and coast to a 41-10 victory. We should be able to learn more about how good the Tigers are next week when they play Louisville.
3. Florida State (USF W 34-14)
Florida State falls out of last week’s tie for second with Clemson after they had some struggles taking care of USF. The game was tied at seven at halftime, and FSU’s lack of returning starters on the offensive line was evident in pass protection. Dalvin Cook was ridiculous though, running for 266 yards and three touchdowns.
4a. Duke (NCCU W 55-0)
Thomas Sirk accounted for 401 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns as the Blue Devils destroyed NC Central. Duke moves up by default after Lousiville’s disaster. We should learn a lot about this team next week when they play Northwestern.
4b. NC State (EKU W 35-0)
State’s defense bounced back well from some iffy moments in week one by pitching a shutout. They dominated Eastern Kentucky, as they should have, and they move up one spot thanks to the Cardinals
6. Virginia Tech (Furman W 42-3)
It was Furman, but Motley did alright throwing the football, going 16-24 for 233 yards, and two touchdowns to no interceptions. There’s very little separation between these middle tier teams right now.
7. UNC (NC A&T W 53-14)
Williams had a strong bounce back game after last week. He tossed two touchdown passes and ran one while not throwing an interception. They get an Illinois team next week that should help us learn more about UNC.
8. Miami (FAU W 44-20)
This game was only 20-17 at the half, but FAU’s five turnovers did nothing to help them stay in the game. Joseph Yearby broke out for 146 yards and a score as the Canes went to 2-0.
9. Pitt (Akron W 24-7)
After giving up 37 points last week to Youngstown State, Pitt’s defense flipped the script and dominated Akron, holding them to 110 total yards. Ollison didn’t have as big of a game as he had last week, but still lead the Panthers in rushing. Did Chad Voytik lose his grip on the starting quarterback position?
10a. Louisville (Houston L 31-34)
Louisville’s supposedly stout defense gave up 462 yards to Houston in what could be a season-derailing loss. They join Virginia as the ACC’s only 0-2 teams, and their seven point loss to Auburn last week suddenly looks much worse. They get to play Clemson next week.
10b. Virginia (Notre Dame L 27-34)
Virginia dropped to 0-2, but moved up two spots? That’s right. They fought and clawed with top-ten Notre Dame right until the bitter end, and man was it bitter. The Hoos lost on a 39 yard touchdown pass with twelve seconds left. They maybe ahead of two undefeated teams with a winless record, but good luck convincing anyone that the teams behind them wouldn’t be 0-2 with Virginia’s schedule.
12. BC (Howard W 76-0)
Boston College could’ve hung 160 on Howard if they had wanted to. It was 41-0 at the end of the first quarter and Howard had eleven yards of offense IN THE ENTIRE GAME. As impressive and ridiculous as those stats are, BC just isn’t going to get any love for beating Howard and Maine. We’ll see what they have next week when they play the Seminoles
13. Syracuse (Wake Forest W 30-17)
The Orange capitalized on turnovers and big plays to beat Wake Forest and go to 2-0. Their defense shutout the Deacs in the second half after facing a four point deficit at halftime. Syracuse is leading the Atlantic Division! *takes picture of standings to remember it by*
14. Wake Forest (Syracuse L 17-30)
Mistakes really hurt Wake in this game. Wolford threw three picks and the team as a whole was rather pathetic running the ball. Dave Clawson is moving this team in the right direction, but there’s still a long way to go.
