NC State rising senior Anton Ipsen opened a busy week for Wolfpack athletes in Rio with an impressive performance in the men’s 400m freestyle event. He managed a personal-best time of 3:48:31, but that wasn’t good enough to advance him into the finals.
He would have needed to shave three seconds off of that time in order to make the finals. International sports: pretty humbling a lot of the time! The first-place finisher in the preliminaries and gold-medal favorite was the U.S.’s Conor Dwyer, who clocked a 3:43:42, nearly five seconds faster than Ipsen.
Still, a 20th-place finish out of 50 competitors for a college kid in his first Olympics ain’t so bad. Ipsen was the top finisher among his countrymen, so if nothing else he can walk away from this event and call himself the fastest Danish swimmer on the planet. I’d put that on a business card if it were me.
Ipsen’s Olympics aren’t over yet. He’ll also compete in the men’s 1500m freestyle event, which begins Aug. 12.
