Trea Turner’s batting average dipped below .300 last week, but he quickly rectified that with an eight-hit weekend against Atlanta. Three Friday, three Saturday, and two Sunday. Now his average is .319, and on Saturday he came a double shy of the cycle.

Turner is hitting .319/.347/.540 this season, with five triples and three home runs. That’s in 27 games. He’s been able to hit for excellent average at the plate while showing off surprising power. There are aspects of his approach that still need work—he’s only walked four times in 118 plate appearances, which ain’t so good—but he’s making it impossible for the Nationals to keep him off the field.
So far in his brief MLB career he’s also proven to be a plus defender at both second base and center field. The way he’s playing right now, he’s looking like an essential part of a Nats team that’s good enough to go to the World Series.
