2016 Summer Olympics: NC State’s Soren Dahl, Simonas Bilis compete Tuesday but fail to advance

Another day in Rio, another day of NC State athletes competing. On Tuesday it was Dane Soren Dahl and Lithuanian Simonas Bilis. Dahl competed as a member of his team’s 4x200m free relay squad, while Bilis swam in the 100m free. Neither one advanced past the preliminaries, alas.

Bilis needed a top-16 finish to qualify for the semifinals later in the day but finished 30th, a little over half a second off the pace needed to advance. (Also more than a second slower than Ryan Held’s 100m split on Sunday, just for comparison.) The margins are so thin in these sprinting events.

Dahl and his teammates finished 13th in the preliminaries, well over three seconds off qualifying pace.

Dahl’s Olympics are over now, but Bilis still has the 50m freestyle event ahead of him. The preliminary rounds for the 50m free begin on Thursday. He’s gonna need one heck of an effort to advance.
