Dave Doeren surprises three NC State walk-ons with scholarships

Always a fun part of college football this time of year: coaches awarding scholarships to deserving walk-ons. Dave Doeren has handed out more than a dozen scholarships to walk-on players during his time in Raleigh, including the three he announced on Monday.

Congrats to tight end Clark Eyers, quarterback Josh Taylor, and linebacker Ford Howell. Maybe Doeren was just that pleased to see all three of them get haircuts, but more likely they earned the scholarships by doing football stuff well.

I never played football at any level on account of the fact I’d have been broken in half within the first five minutes of practice, so don’t have a clue what it’s like to be a walk-on. With no experience to go on, I’ve always imagined walk-ons filling a Rudy-esque tackling dummy role in practice. They’re gettin’ everybody ready for Purdue, with no regard for their own well-being!

Anyway. So it’s probably not exactly like that, but I’m sure theirs is often a thankless job. Lots of work in practice without the reward of playing on Saturdays. Getting a scholarship out of the deal isn’t a bad consolation prize, though.
