Dave Doeren talks injuries, offensive line, new faces making impacts

Prior to Meet the Pack Day on Sunday evening, Dave Doeren met with media members to discuss the Wolfpack’s progress in fall camp, which is now in week two. Pack Pride has video and a transcript of his remarks. Notes:

— Freshman C.J. Riley will be redshirted because of an injury he sustained before camp started. He’s a wide receiver (oooof course). Offensive lineman Coult Culler has been out with an injury, and Doeren isn’t sure if it is a long-term setback. Quarterback Jakobi Meyers is still recovering from an ankle injury that’s limited him in practice. [UPDATE: NCSU announced that Culler is retiring from football.]

The starting offensive line, as of today, would be Tyler Jones (LT), Garrett Bradbury (LG), Joe Scelfo (C), Tony Adams (RG), and Will Richardson (RT). Left side is a bit more of a question mark than the right side, but I think this should end up being a solid group.

— Doeren had positive words for the work put in by freshman receiver Kelvin Harmon and freshman tight end Thad Moss, both of whom appear to have a better than average chance at seeing the field. Harmon pretty much has to play after the attrition at the position.

— He also singled out defensive backs Dexter Wright (S), Tim McCloud (CB), and Tim Glass (S). Brock Miller (LB) and Shug Frazier (DL) are other young guys who’ve been impressive in camp so far.

— Nyheim Hines started camp at slot receiver and that won’t change, though he will still get some touches out of the backfield. He’ll be more important to the passing game than the running game, unless State gets hit with another barrage of injuries at RB.

— At tight end, Cole Cook is the starter in the more tradition hand-on-the-ground spot, while Jaylen Samuels is first-string monkey wrench. Pharoah McKever is behind Samuels at what Doeren calls the “move tight end,” and Moss can play either position, which is a credit to his blocking skills.
