The United States advanced to the finals in the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay event on Sunday thanks in part to NC State’s Ryan Held. Held did not disappoint in his Olympics debut, posting a better time than two of his teammates.
.@heldilox with a 47.79 split Team USA WINS heat 2 with 3:12.38, No. 2 time heading into tonight! Finals team to be announced later today

That puts the U.S. in excellent position for a gold medal in this event, especially when you consider that the team didn’t even use its big firepower in the preliminaries. Michael Phelps, Nathan Adrian, and Caeleb Dressel will make up three-quarters of the team that swims in the final tonight--none swam in the prelims. Held could be the fourth member of the group, but that seems unlikely at this point.
Whether or not he’s in the pool tonight, though, Held is probably coming home with an Olympic medal.

The Swim entered the pool area like he always does with a bit of a strut. He wants the other disciplines, who are watching this first practice, to know that he is nothing but slick.
