Dennis Smith’s performance at Adidas Nations over the weekend not only impressed NBA scouts, but also the media members there to cover it. Sports Illustrated’s Luke Winn wrote at length about Smith’s performance, comparing him to a young Chris Paul:
Smith showed flashes of freshman-at-Wake Forest-era Chris Paul—the quick hands and disruptive defensive mentality, the elite ballhandling and drive-and-dish skills, a jumper that’s not broken but still needs work—and did enough that his circle of advisors decided to shut him down for both games the following day as a precautionary measure
And according to Winn, at least one NBA scout thinks that Smith is now in the discussion for No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 draft. Of course, his draft status will depend largely on how he plays at NC State and not in an exhibition game, but still, that’s pretty cool.
Fox Sports’ Aaron Torres also wrote about Smith, detailing the kid’s road back from his knee injury. Here’s something I didn’t know: DSJ has an extra ligament in the knee he injured, which helped speed up his recovery. You can have extra knee ligaments? Pretty handy to have if you’re an athlete, clearly. From now on maybe we should only recruit guys who have extra knee ligaments, just in case.
Can basketball season go ahead and start now? I’m ready.
