NC State wrestling's Nick Gwiazdowski goes out in style

NC State heavyweight Nick Gwiazdowski completed another undefeated season with a pair of wins over the weekend. His victory on Friday night wasn't enough to help the Wolfpack overcome a very good Virginia Tech team, but on Sunday it was the difference against a top-10 Missouri squad.

State went into the final match of the evening down 17-13 to Mizzou, and therefore needed Gwiazdowski to score a decisive win. A win by an individual wrestler nets anywhere from three to six points for his team, depending on the circumstances. Most decisions earn three points. Wrestlers have to win by big margins--or pin their opponents--to score more than three for their team.

As luck would have it, State and Gwiazdowski went into the final battle with a huge edge. Gwizz (26-0) is the top-ranked heavyweight in the country, while his Missouri counterpart, James Romero, has a losing record on the season.

The Wolfpack needed five points from Gwizz for a team victory, and he delivered with a technical fall against his overmatched opponent. That's to say, Gwizz defeated Romero by a 17-1 score, which earned the Pack five points and the win.

The slam that got @PackWrestle fans screaming, @NGWIZZZ got the offense rolling early in his decisive tech fall win. http://pic.twitter.com/uevlly1Bph
