Now that the regular season is over and the Wolfpack's bowl destination is clear, it is officially time to look forward to next year. The Pack's recruiting success has taken a small dip this year, but it has some time to catch up to Dave Doeren's first two full classes.
There are only about three or four spots or so left in the class, some of which are slotted to specific positions as well as a few players that the staff "would make room for." There is one more official visit weekend before the holidays, with a break from then until early January. That weekend is currently ongoing, with the biggest target (literally and figuratively) on the board currently in Raleigh.
Dexter Lawrence, the consensus five-star tackle from Wake Forest, is currently on campus for his last official visit before he announces on Monday at 3:30. It is believed that he is down to Clemson and NC State, with Alabama getting the courtesy mention. Needless to say, as a top 5 recruit by all services, Lawrence would be in the running for best recruit ever landed by the NC State football program. A commitment from Lawrence would have the defensive line absolutely stacked in the coming years.
With the commitment of CJ Riley last week, State has gotten themselves in a position to be picky on taking another receiver. Diondre Overton is the obvious choice should he elect to commit, but the Greensboro star appears to be leaning to Clemson. If they could pull this off, it would be a huge commitment for the Wolfpack, as it puts a star in a position of need. Kelvin Harmon, a combination 3/4 star recruit may have briefly committed to the State coaches on Thursday, but decided to wait before making anything official. He immediately decommitted from South Carolina and opened his recruitment up to five schools. I still expect him to end up in the class, but home state Rutgers could be a looming threat. Chavis Dawkins from South Carolina is also a possibility, as he put up big numbers this season for his high school team.
The defensive back board has been perhaps the toughest to figure out. For a long time, it looked like the spots were being held for Isaiah Stallings, Carlos Becker, and Henry Miller. So far, Stallings has committed to State, but Becker and Miller oddly have waited a long time. Becker still has interest in Kentucky and Florida State, and may wait too long to have a spot in Raleigh. Miller is also on the verge of losing a spot, as he is still contemplating Pitt and Rutgers as potential destinations. Nick McCloud from South Carolina is the primary contender to take their spot. A fellow 6'2" corner like the other two, he has been a popular prospect of late, and now South Carolina is getting involved. If he decides soon, the pick should be State. Cornerback Troy Pride, a former VT commit, is on campus with Lawrence, but he may be more of a long shot.
Rico Dowdle is another late bloomer in the recruiting game. The quarterback/do everything Asheville product has offers from State, Wake Forest, Tennessee, South Carolina, and BC. The only known official visit he has taken has been to Raleigh, and the Pack like him as an athlete, likely on offense. He is another who likely needs to claim a spot soon.
Thaddeus Moss has the most famous father of the prospects, as the son of Randy Moss, and is a very talented player in his own right. Doubling as a tight end and defensive end, he may actually prefer the defensive side of the ball despite his bloodlines. He has officially visited NC State and is also considering UCLA and Arizona State. The Pack may be in a surprisingly good place for the four star.
Elysee Mbem-Bosse is a four star linebacker from Georgia (a former teammate of Quentez Johnson) who has visited NC State multiple times (once officially), but could end up at Oklahoma or Auburn. He will decide soon as an early enrollee. Josh Ball is a four star offensive lineman from Virginia who officially visited a few weeks ago. The problem has been his commitment to Florida State. However, there is a chance he could change his mind and stay within driving distance of home.
The remaining month and a half will make or break this recruiting class, with the first domino falling on Monday with Lawrence.
