NC State RB coach Des Kitchings a finalist for Furman job, per report

Losing Kitchings would not be a good thing.

NC State running backs coach and recruiting coordinator Des Kitchings is one of three finalists for the head coaching gig at Furman, according to a report from Pete Yanity of WSPA-7 in Spartanburg. The other two finalists per the report are Air Force offensive line coach Clay Hendrix and Charleston Southern head coach Jamey Chadwell.

Kitchings and Hendrix are both Furman alums and both have served on Furman’s staff as an assistant in the past. (Hendrix also spent a brief stint at NCSU as a graduate assistant under Dick Sheridan.) Chadwell doesn’t have any direct connections to Furman but has had a nice run at CSU, including a pair of FCS playoff berths.

At NC State, Kitchings has been a crucial part of the staff’s recruiting efforts. Kitchings had big roles in landing Kentavius Street, Nyheim Hines, Johnny Frasier, and Emanuel McGirt, all of whom were blue chip players ranked among the top in the state coming out of high school. Street and Hines quickly became critical players for the Wolfpack.

So his loss would definitely be felt in Raleigh, and not at a good time, either—with National Signing Day only a few months away, schools will begin making their final pushes, and the relationship between a prospect and his lead recruiter often means a lot.

But I’m certainly not gonna blame a guy for jumping at his first head coaching gig, if indeed he gets the opportunity.
