Matt Canada might be (will be!) LSU’s next offensive coordinator

Put your hand down, no you didn’t see this coming.

(Wednesday afternoon update: Canada officially hired by LSU.)

Let’s set the way-back machine for late 2014/early 2015. Matt Canada has just finished his second season as offensive coordinator at NC State. Rumors of his interest in the OC job at Tennessee helped earn him a new three-year extension from NCSU.

A year later, at the end of the 2015 season, he was fired by head coach Dave Doeren. That was a confusing turn of events, to say the least, since it seemed like Canada’s offenses did a pretty good job. Most State fans at that point, if they had to choose, would have fired the defensive coordinator.

So Doeren and Canada move on; Doeren hires Eli Drinkwitz from Boise State and also nabs Drinkwitz’s quarterback, while Canada lands as OC at Pitt.

Canada/Pitt have a huge year, and the Panthers average more than 42 points per game. Matt Canada is now the favorite to become the offensive coordinator at LSU, per FOX Sports’ Bruce Feldman. That gig would likely shoot his salary well north of $1 million, doubling his salary from what he was earning at NC State, right before he was fired.

College football is weird. College football is extra weird when you get certain combative egos attempting to work together at the wrong time. (The right time is never the time.) This appears to have, ahem, paid off for Matt Canada, though. When this is all over, he owes ol’ Dave a gold-plated basket of flowers.
