NC State fires head men’s soccer coach Kelly Findley after six seasons

Findley never got the Wolfpack to the NCAA tournament.

The men’s soccer job is easily one of the hardest on campus, because the ACC is such an incredibly deep league. There are five ACC teams in the top 10, eight in the top 25. Wolfpack head coach Kelly Findley, who came to Raleigh after a successful run at Butler, wasn’t able to turn the Pack around within this difficult environment.

On Thursday, NC State announced that it has parted ways with Findley, who managed to win only nine conference games over six seasons. Findley’s teams never reached the NCAAs and never advanced beyond the quarterfinals of the ACC tournament. In the end, he couldn’t overcome the internal and external challenges of the job, and pretty much just replicated the run of futility that cost his predecessor this job.

NC State has only been to the NCAAs three times in the last 15 years and hasn’t won in the NCAAs since 1994. We are a long, long way from State’s early-90s heyday, which included one Final Four appearance.

Debbie Yow has struck gold on a few coaching changes in her time in Raleigh, and she’ll need to work that magic again here.
