NC State women’s soccer advances in NCAA tournament with win over No. 8 Minnesota

They’ve had a pretty good year.

I don’t follow many of the non-revenue sports closely but my ears always perk up when it comes tournament time. NC State’s women’s soccer team had a great year, made the NCAAs for the first time in quite a while, and they opened the tourney on the road against a top-10 team Saturday night.

They won in penalties after a hard-fought scoreless contest. (NC State actually looked like the better team for most of the first half.) During the shootout, State goalkeeper Sydney Wootten made a pair of clutch saves, and the Wolfpack never missed. This was the result:

Safe to say, that’s an upset. State is through to play Pepperdine in the next round; Pepperdine also won on penalties to advance. But there’s no need to consider the pragmatic side of the tournament, let’s just watch that video over and over. Sports can be great in a lot of ways, especially in the small ways. Go Pack.
