Bobby Lutz staying at NC State, but leaving coaching staff for new role

Well this is ... something. NC State assistant coach Bobby Lutz, who earlier in the day was rumored to be on his way to Georgia Tech, isn't leaving Raleigh after all. But he isn't remaining on the Wolfpack's coaching staff, either. His new role, the school announced Tuesday evening, will be as "Special Assistant to the Deputy Athletic Director for External Operations."

No, I didn't make that up.

That is one heck of a title right there, I gotta say. I know what you're wondering. Steven, what does the SATTDADFEO do? And let me tell you ... I have no idea. It does involve things, with a healthy dose of stuff.

In his new role, Lutz will assist the Deputy AD for External Operations with a variety of administrative duties associated with the men's basketball program, including assistance with the personal and academic development of student-athlete, housing arrangements, planning and logistics associated with the team's upcoming foreign tour and other special projects.

We can safely say this much: NC State has done an excellent job of carving out positions for guys it values. See, for instance, Dereck Whittenburg's transition to a sort of ambassador role for State athletics, which allowed Rob Moxley to leave the bench and take on more of a behind-the-scenes role.

While it's unclear exactly how much Lutz will be involved with the basketball program, this shift in jobs happens to open up another spot on Mark Gottfried's staff. And if that spot ends up being filled by Florida Gulf Coast head coach Joe Dooley, Gottfried will have earned a tip of the cap for his exceptional coaching staff finaglin' skills.
