It took some time for NC State to score, but there was never any doubt about which team was better. The Wolfpack squandered an opportunity in the first quarter but bounced back to score two touchdowns in the second quarter, and from there NC State rolled to an 35-0 victory over Eastern Kentucky.
It was a slow start for the offense, which left the game in doubt for a bit longer than we would have liked. There was a turnover involved here, and a field goal blocked there, but the mistakes ultimately made no difference. NC State out-gained Eastern Kentucky to a significant degree all night.
The defense was the the star of the show most of the night for the Pack, as it constantly frustrated EKU in third-and-long situations. The Colonels were incapable of sustaining drives. State was mistake-prone in Week 1 in that the defense allowed some significant chunk plays; against Eastern Kentucky, the chunk plays were erased, and there were few penalty-type bailouts. The Colonels' rush-heavy offense didn't really have recourse.
NC State shut the door on EKU in the third quarter with a pair of touchdowns to extend the lead to 28-0, and from that point the game was academic. The Colonels weren't going to muster enough points needed to make the game interesting, and even with a few scores, they'd need to slow down Matt Dayes and Jaylen Samuels.
EKU managed none of those things, and the Pack finished with its first shutout of the season.
