Pack 9 pummel UNCA

That’s more like it.

NC State jumped to a 10-0 lead and cruised to a 13-1 win over UNC-Asheville Tuesday night at the Doak at Dail, winning its second straight to move to two games over .500 overall and 8-8 at home.

In the bottom of the first, Stephen Pitarra walked on four pitches in an ominous start for the Bulldogs and starter Nick Boyles. Will Wilson followed with a single, and Josh McLain and Brad Debo followed with back-to-back RBI hits. An RBI groundout from Joe Dunand made it 3-0 after one.

Wilson doubled home Brock Deatherage, who had singled with one out, to make it 4-0 in the second. McLain flied into a double play, 7-1-5, but Pitarra scored from third before the third out was made, making it 5-0.

Debo and Evan Mendoza hit back-to-back singles to start the third. Dunand walked to load the bases with nobody out. Shane Shepard walked to force in a run and Brett Kinneman followed with a two-run double. A two-run single from Deatherage made it 10-0.

That was more than enough for Johnny Piedmonte, who took the bump after a prolonged absence and got the win with five innings of one-run ball. A solo shot from Brandon Lankford was the only mistake that hurt. Another little used senior, Cory Wilder, managed two shutout frames. Cody Beckman and Dalton Feeney both pitched a clean inning, with Feeney fanning the side in the ninth.

McLain, Debo, Mendoza, and Kinneman all had three hits as part of an 18-hit attack for the Pack. Two of Kinneman’s knocks were doubles and he drove in three. Pitarra had a pair of hits and reached twice via a base on balls.

The Pack have 6:30 starts Friday and Saturday against Florida State before wrapping up the home series Sunday with a 1 p.m. matinee.
