State evens series with Seminoles

Long ball lifts Pack

NC State rebounded from Friday night’s flop to even the series with visiting Florida State. Evan Mendoza staked the Pack nine to a 3-0 lead with a first-inning homer, and the good guys held on from there to win 4-3.

Mendoza took Tyler Holton, who pitched seven no-hit innings a week earlier against UNC, yard with two outs, scoring Stephen Pitarra, who had led off the game with a single, and Josh McLain, who had walked. So much for a second no-hit bid.

All of State’s scoring came on the long ball. Brad Debo made it 4-0 with a solo shot in the fourth. Debo, Mendoza, and Pitarra all finished with a pair of hits.

Brian Brown earned his first decision of the season, getting the win with 6.1 innings of two-run ball. Tommy DeJuneas allowed the Seminoles to claw to within a run, but Austin Staley and Cody Beckman combined for a scoreless ninth to preserve the win. The save was Beckman’s first of his junior campaign.

NC State can get its second ACC series win, and move to 7-8 in league play, by winning the rubber match today at 1 p.m.
