4-star point guard Lavar Batts flips from VCU to NC State

Kevin Keatts nabbed his first big recruiting victory on Saturday.

Blue chip point guard Lavar Batts announced his decision to decommit from VCU and sign with NC State on Saturday. Scout’s Evan Daniels has the story. Batts is a consensus four-star player in the 2017 class and a North Carolina native. He will be eligible to play immediately this fall.

Batts committed to VCU in September but Rams head coach Will Wade left for LSU last month. Batts was already familiar with Keatts, and given his desire to play in an up-tempo, pressure-heavy style, NC State was a natural fit. From the Evan Daniels piece:

"That factors in a lot," Batts said when asked about their style of play. "I want to play up and down, uptempo and I don't like walking the ball up. I love pressure and full court defense. That's how he plays and I want to be apart (sic) of that."

Batts is listed at 6’2 and 165 pounds. His jumper is gonna need some work but he looks like he has pretty good court vision and a solid handle. But the most important thing is that he wants to be at NC State and he wants to play in this system. We’re starting from scratch on the whole “trying hard at basketball” thing, so I’ll happily welcome guys like Batts who are invested but also a little raw.

As you can see there, dude plays above the rim, too. I think Batts and Markell Johnson could make for a really dynamic backcourt tandem next season. It ain’t always gonna be Shakespeare in motion, mind you, but if those two get after it, they’re going to make some good things happen.
