NC State center Omer Yurtseven suspended first 9 games of season by NCAA

Not ideal, but far from the worst-case scenario, too.

NC State and Omer Yurtseven finally learned of his fate: the NCAA handed down a nine-game suspension and also ordered the freshman to repay $1,000 to a charity of his choice. The NCAA had been reveiwing Yurtseven’s amateur eligibility status, as he had spent time playing professionally overseas prior to enrolling.

The suspension is longer than I was hoping for, but hey, at least he can play this year. Yurtseven will be eligible to make his debut on Dec. 15 against Appalachian State. He will not have to miss any conference games, which obviously is critical.

The nine games he’ll miss: Georgia Southern, St. Francis, Montana (Paradise Jam), Washington State/Creighton (Paradise Jam), a Paradise Jam opponent TBD, Loyola Chicago, Illinois, Boston University, and Tennessee State.

State should for the most part weather his absence without much problem, but it sure would have been nice to have him available for Creighton and Illinois.
