The Pack now needs three wins in the next day and a half to advance.
When NC State faced Navy in the opening round of the Raleigh regional with both teams' aces on the hill, a pitcher's duel was a fair expectation. Instead, the Pack hit five homers and prevailed in a 13-8 slugfest. Against high-powered Coastal Carolina, a team State outlasted 13-10 earlier in the season, it would've been fair to expect fireworks. Instead, NC State went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and wasted a good effort from Cory Wilder and Cody Beckman, losing 4-0 to fall into the loser's bracket and an elimination game against Navy.
The game began Saturday night after a lengthy rain delay and was resumed Sunday afternoon in the ninth because more foul weather had halted the game after midnight.
Alex Cunningham (5.1 IP, 4 H, 2 BB, 6 K) and Mike Morrison (3.2 perfect innings, 3 K) combined for the shutout for the Chanticleers, who will await the winner of NC State and Navy on Monday. Whichever team emerges will need to sweep both games against the Chants to advance to the super regionals.
Wilder worked in trouble for most of the night but benefitted from a double play and picked runner at second to allow just a run in four innings despite giving up five hits and walking a couple. He struck out four. Beckman followed with 2.1 shutout innings, but the rest of the bullpen faltered from there. Tommy DeJuneas, often missing his spots by a matter of feet rather than inches, gave up a pair of runs and the Chants tacked on one more against Sean Adler when Karl Keglovits allowed an inherited runner to score when play resumed Sunday.
Joe Dunand doubled and Preston Palmeiro tripled for the Pack, but the team had more home runs (five) against Navy than total hits (four) against Coastal.
Zach Remillard did most of the damage at the plate for a Coastal team that came in averaging well over seven runs a game, going 3-for-5 with two runs batted in.
