The next two weeks determine whether NC State is alive or toast

Three games into league play and we’re already in a do-or-who-cares situation.

The scheduling gods were kind this year, giving NC State a string of favorable matchups in league play, most of which are at home. State plays at Boston College on Wednesday, but then returns for a homestand against Georgia Tech, Pittsburgh, and Wake Forest, in that order.

I don’t know a much but I am certain we all overreacted to the result on Sunday, because how the hell could we not overreact to that. It’s a terrible omen, though, and a continuation of a pattern that has pervaded this season. It was real bad.

State can still theoretically technically possibly get right over the next couple of weeks, but State also can dive headfirst into the abyss. I have no idea which way this is gonna go. Is Dennis Smith a real leader, or is he going to let the frustrating reality of this team’s current situation overcome him?

It is difficult not to be hasty in every judgment after your team loses in historic fashion to a conference rival. It’s also just game three of 18, but the overall picture is not one that inspires encouragement, especially not this year, with the ACC as good as it is. Wake Forest has easily been more impressive than State this year, for example.

I’ll continue to hold a small shrivel of hope-related vague-confidence that NC State can turn this around, although I’m pretty damn sure by now that this is not going to happen. Either way, we’ll know for sure in a couple of weeks.
