After nabbing a commitment from Thadeus Moss, NC State still has a handful of slots to fill in 2016. National Signing Day is less than two weeks away.
With just a week and a half left until National Signing Day, the class of 2016 is winding down for NC State. With around four to five spots left to fill in the class, the Pack coaches can be somewhat picky about who they finish with. This weekend and the next's group of visitors should determine who fills those final needs.
THIS WEEKEND
A small group of currently committed players are in town this weekend, but three important previously uncommitted prospects made the trip to Raleigh.
The biggest name to hit campus is four star tight end/defensive end Thad Moss, son of NFL legend Randy Moss. The product of powerhouse Mallard Creek in Charlotte has exceptional hands and size. He may end up moving to defensive end, as he believes that is his best position, but he knows that he would be a weapon in new offensive coordinator Eliah Drinkwitz' offense. Moss was down to a final three with State, Texas A&M, and UCLA. During the first half of the basketball game against Duke, Moss committed to NC State. His commitment made the front page of both ESPN and Yahoo, bringing good publicity to a program that needed some spark on the trail.
JJ Givens, a defensive back from Virginia, was once a South Carolina commitment but backed off when Steve Spurrier retired. NC State was involved with him originally, so when he decommitted, it was natural to for them to get involved again. A high three star, Givens is also looking strongly at Maryland. All signs point to Givens committing next Monday, after he sees College Park. This one appears to be toss-up between the two schools.
DeVontres Dukes has had the best story of the visits this weekend, driving all the way up from Florida by himself in the snow. A former UCF commitment, the wide receiver is a possibility to commit while on the trip. If he does not, he will likely decide on Signing Day between the Pack and Marshall.
Among the commitments, offensive lineman Kollin Byers and wide receiver Daeshawn Stephens are in town. Linebacker Brock Miller was supposed to come up from Florida, but had to reschedule for next week due to the weather.
There are also a few underclassmen expected to swing by campus at some point (likely the basketball game against Duke) this weekend.
FINISHING UP
There are a few recruits scheduled to visit next weekend, but they are of the sleeper type. After that, February 3 is Signing Day, so the Pack will almost certainly have finished things up by then.
Of the decisions not previously mentioned, the three that will attract the most attention are Kelvin Harmon, Carlos Becker, and Nick McCloud. Harmon is a four star receiver from New Jersey visiting Miami this weekend. Even with this development, the former Gamecock commitment may be a lean to end up in Raleigh. He would be a hugely important get as this class is in need of offensive playmakers. Becker is someone the Pack has been on from the start and has recently blown up. He visited Florida State last weekend and is visiting Ohio State this weekend. He is a high school teammate of Riley Nicholson and played in the prestigious Under Armour All-American Game. It appears to be 50-50 battle between the Pack and the Seminoles. McCloud has been a Pack lean, but is on Georgia Tech's campus now. If offered by the Yellow Jackets, the corner from South Carolina could commit on the spot.
Despite struggling for most of the recruiting period, NC State could have a respectable finish to the cycle by pulling in players such as Moss, Harmon, and Becker.
