Former UNC-CH baseball player Wood Myers transferring to NC State

Here's something you don't see often: an athlete is not only transferring within the ACC, but he's heading to the rival next door. Wood Myers was a multi-year starter for UNC-Chapel Hill, and on Tuesday he announced that he's moving on to NC State.

Committed to NC State. Can't wait to be apart of their culture! http://pic.twitter.com/NqNN5J1trp

Myers broke his left fibula during a game this past March, which put a premature end to his sophomore campaign. He started every game up to that point, posting a .333/.444/.353 batting line. As a freshman, he made 54 starts, hitting .298/.358/.358.

While he doesn't bring a lot of power to the plate (few do in this dead-bat era), he hits for average and brings enough punch to make him an asset as a middle infielder. He can hit the gaps, and he's got pretty good wheels (10-14 career in stolen base attempts), which will be useful for a Wolfpack team that attempted a total of 50 steals in 2015.

The thing that's not clear to me at this point is his eligibility status. He played for Chapel Hill last season and he's transferring within the conference, which can create complications. If for whatever reason he can help straightaway, then this is a pretty big deal.

[UPDATE -- Myers will sit out 2016. h/t Drew Johnson]
