Assistant coach Ryan Nielsen is leaving NC State to become Saints’ new DL coach

This is a bummer.

It was only a matter of time before NC State assistant Ryan Nielsen got a promotion of some kind, whether that was elsewhere in the college ranks or in the NFL. On Tuesday afternoon, Wolfpack head coach Dave Doeren announced that Nielsen is leaving to become the DL coach for the New Orleans Saints. It’s a tough loss for the program.

Nielsen, who served in that same capacity for the Wolfpack, had been on Doeren’s staff since his first season in Raleigh. He helped to build one of the most disruptive and skilled defensive lines in the country, which helped the defense make some significant strides overall. He’d earned a good reputation, and obviously it’s paid off.

NC State wasted approximately zero time replacing Nielsen, which suggests his move to New Orleans had been in the works for a while.

Breaking: Texas Tech assistant coach Kevin Patrick has accepted an offer to coach defensive line at NC State. He also had an offer from USF.

Patrick spent only one season as Texas Tech’s defensive line coach and prior to that spent a couple of years at North Texas. He also has extensive assistant coaching history at South Florida.
