Daniels would be an outstanding pickup.
Utah transfer wing Devon Daniels no doubt has heard from a bunch of schools since his decision to leave the Utes program following his freshman season. NC State definitely is in the mix, with Daniels set to visit Raleigh on Monday, per ESPN’s Jeff Goodman.
Based on Daniels’ on-court production in 2017, his addition is a no-brainer. He averaged 9.9 points and 4.6 rebounds per game as a key part of Utah’s rotation. The 6’5, 200-pound wing-forward made 61.8% of his twos as a secondary scorer on the team, and that’s a really impressive number, especially since the kid isn’t huge.
He was not a big three-point shooter—he attempted only 34 all year—but he was effective, knocking down over 41% of those attempts. He also made over 70% of his free throws.
In Pac-12 play, he ranked eighth in effective field goal percentage and 12th in two-point field goal percentage. He also proved a good passer and solid defensive rebounder. The biggest knock on his game at the offensive end would be his propensity for turnovers, but I think we could live with that.
Daniels’ Utah career did not come to a smooth end, which may be the reason he opted to leave. He was suspended for three games late in the season for the classic “conduct detrimental to the team” non-reason reason. When he came back, he played sparingly in the Utes’ last two games, both of which were losses.
Like NC State target Miles Wilson, Daniels will sit out the upcoming season and then have three years of eligibility remaining.
