The Blue Hens managed to stave off a sweep Sunday.
Brian Brown had a quality start for NC State against Delaware on Sunday afternoon, but the Wolfpack’s pitching staff would eventually falter for the first time this weekend. The Blue Hens scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to propel them to a 5-4 victory.
Brown allowed two runs over six innings and was replaced by Dalton Feeney, who promptly walked the first two Delaware batters of the seventh. He was then replaced by Austin Staley, who beaned the first batter he saw, loading the bases with nobody out.
The margins are thin in baseball, and when you can’t get out of your own way, it tends to hurt. Thanks to the erratic pitching to begin the frame, the Blue Hens plated three, flipping a 3-2 deficit to a 5-3 lead. State got one back on an Evan Mendoza solo shot in the bottom half of the frame but went quietly the rest of the way. The Wolfpack managed only six hits all afternoon.
NC State did pick up the series win this weekend despite losing the finale, and at 27-21 overall the Wolfpack is in a lot better shape than it was a couple of weekends ago. A sweep over Delaware would have been nice, but getting series wins is always the goal.
State just has to make sure it keeps the wins coming as the regular season winds down. Anything worse than a 3-1 record (UNCW midweek, then a series vs. Pitt) over the next seven days will be a disappointment.
