NC State announces hiring of new women’s gymnastics coach Kim Landrus

Landrus comes to NC State after a successful run at Illinois.

NC State has lost a couple of familiar faces to retirement this year. Men’s golf coach Richard Sykes called it a career after 45+ years at State, and gymnastics coach Mark Stevenson retired after 37 seasons with the Pack. Stevenson was the only head coach in the program’s history. Kim Landrus will be the second.

The now-former Illinois head coach put together an impressive track record there, leading the Illini to seven consecutive top-25 finishes and three trips to NCAA nationals. Stevenson won a handful of EAGL conference*** titles during his time at NC State but only earned one trip to nationals, and that was in 1998.

(***Gymnastics is not a sponsored sport by the ACC since so few member institutions field teams. There’s actually just three: NCSU, UNC, and Pitt.)

Maybe Landrus is the latest Debbie Yow hire to take a program from consistent regional success to national prominence. We certainly wish her the best of luck.
