Preston Palmeiro yet to agree on terms with Baltimore Orioles

The Baltimore Orioles selected NC State junior first baseman Preston Palmeiro in the seventh round of the 2016 MLB Draft. The slot value for that pick is more than $200,000, but Palmeiro has not signed yet, and he has until July 15 to make a decision one way or the other. In college baseball, a kid can get drafted and still return to college, if he does not sign a pro deal.

So that’s what’s facing Preston Palmeiro. Or maybe that’s only a very small part of what he’s weighing. Thing is, his dad has a rather ... colorful ... history with the Baltimore franchise. That might be a bigger factor than anyone involved with this expected.

I mean, if you’re the Baltimore Orioles and you’re thinking about drafting Raffy’s kid, you’re gonna do your homework. Especially because if you draft Raffy’s kid, he not only has leverage as a junior, but he’s also got that whole history thing to help him get a few extra bucks above slot.

He doesn’t need a pound of flesh from Baltimore, but he can squeeze it out of them, too.
