NC State basketball team’s trip to Italy postponed over safety concerns

NC State announced Friday afternoon that the men’s basketball team’s scheduled trip to Italy in August has been postponed until 2017. The U.S. State Department recently issued a European travel alert to Americans, amid the charged and uncertain climate overseas.

Here’s a statement from NCSU, via ESPN’s Andy Katz:

"In an abundance of caution, and due to continuing safety and travel concerns emphasized by the US State Department recently extending the European Travel Alert for American Travelers through the end of August, our men's basketball program will postpone its international trip to Italy (Aug. 5-15) until 2017. "

Considering the number of very serious developments to hit that part of the world in recent months, the basketball team’s sightseeing trip just wasn’t worth the risk. Not to mention that State has a Turkish national on the team now, and who knows what he’s going through emotionally after the events of this week.

No need to try to fit basketball into any of this, because basketball doesn’t matter.
