Saturday News: Cooper lead grows, McCrory whines

COOPER STRETCHES LEAD AS MCCRORY COMPLAINTS DISMISSED (WFAE, WUNC-FM) -- Friday was not a good day for Governor Pat McCrory in his effort to remain in office. Attorney General Roy Cooper extended his lead to about 6,300 votes as counties reported more provisional and absentee ballot results. The McCrory campaign’s complaints were also rejected by elections boards in Durham, Wake, Halifax and other counties.

College football schedule, Week 12: Kickoff times, TV channels
Louisville was KO'd from the college football playoff hunt at the hands of Houston on Thursday night, though there may never have been a lot of hope for the Cards, seeing as how both Clemson and Michigan remained in the top four this week despite losing games. The top four clearly are in control of their own destinies, and there ain't much time left now for them to screw things up.
In the ACC, it'll be at least one more week until the Coastal is decided, as both Virginia Tech and UNC are stepping outside of the conference on Saturday. And I see you, Tar Heels, scheduling a FCS team (albeit a good one) before our game on Friday.
Nationally, there are three games between ranked opponents, beginning with Florida-LSU. Washington State plays Colorado, which has somehow managed to climb into the top 10. They probably don't deserve to be there, but hey, good for them. Later on, Oklahoma and West Virginia meet with some Big 12 title implications on the line. The Sooners are in first at 7-0, while WVU (5-1) has to win to stay in the hunt.

Miami vs. NC State: How to watch, game time, tv channel, odds, online streaming, and more
Hey, how ‘bout we go get ourselves bowl-bound?
NC State is certainly laying on the drama when it comes to its quest for bowl eligibility, even throwing in a plot twist no one saw by losing to Boston College. That was some I see dead people stuff right there. But the Wolfpack managed to rebound and restore at least some good vibes by beating Syracuse last weekend.
Now they have a shot to get to six wins and send this senior class out with a third consecutive bowl trip by beating Miami in Carter-Finley Saturday afternoon. The Hurricanes enter this week at 6-4 (3-3) and they’re just trying to close out the year strong, with a bowl berth secured but the Coastal Division out of reach.
And hey, for you extremely extremely superstitious folks out there, the same ACC Network crew that called NC State’s win in Syracuse will be on the mikes for this one too.

NC State women’s soccer advances to Sweet 16 with upset over Pepperdine
This is a lot of fun now.
NC State’s women’s soccer team is in the midst of an incredible NCAA tournament run—it began with a win at Minnesota in penalties, and it continued on Friday night with a late goal against Pepperdine. NC State was not expected to win either of these games, but here they are, on to the Sweet Sixteen.

They aren’t expected to go any farther, but also they were not expected to get this farther. The heck with anybody’s farther.
NC State is expected to face the region’s top seed, Stanford, in the Elight Eight, but regardless, NC State has shown that it can find a way through superior talent. If Stanford happens to lose, then the region suddenly becomes wide open. You can follow Stanford’s game right here.

Pack Pulls Away From Montana For 85-72 Win in Game One of Paradise Jam

A win is a win, right? It wasn’t pretty the whole time, but the Pack took over in the second half to pull away from Montana for its third win of the year.
Offensively, State was pretty good all night, hitting 58% of its shots. Markell Johnson had something of a coming out party, snagging 4 steals to go along with 6 assists and 9 points. Johnson knocked down his lone three point attempt and threw down a bunch of fast break dunks off his steals. He and Smith on the floor at the same time seemed to work pretty well. The duo even connected on a lob at one point.
Smith was clearly the focus of Montana’s defense. He was targeted several times with traps as he tried to set up the offense. He still managed to score 21, but settled for long jumpers at times. Elsewhere, Dorn continues to be really good. He showcased his mid-range jumper more in this game than the previous ones, and knocked down 8-12 shots on his way to 16 points. Dorn has scored in double figures every game this season.
Abu also had a huge game. 25 and 8 are certainly some quality numbers, and the 25 is a career high for the junior big man. State needed a big game from him given the lack of depth down low, and they certainly got it.
There is still a glaring lack of perimeter shooting on this team when Henderson isn’t hitting, and tonight he was not hitting. The senior went 1-6 from beyond the arc, which was part of a 4-14 effort from three for the team. Maybe Maverick Rowan can find some consistency when he returns? That would be huge for this team.
Defensively, State was pretty terrible in the first half. The switch to zone in the second half was a good move though and helped stimulate the Pack’s run that blew the game open. State defended the three pretty well on Friday, holding a solid shooting team to under 33% from the outside, but gave up a lot of buckets in pretty much every other way in a first half where Montana hung 40 points on the board.
Being without 3 starters/rotation players is not something that can be overlooked. This was only about 75% of the NC State basketball team, so it’s tough to complain too much about some of the concerning things shown on Friday, even more so because of the resolve they showed by pulling away at the end. The bottom line is the Pack is 3-0 and being undefeated is better than being not undefeated.
State plays the winner of Creighton and Washington State on Sunday, which will definitely be a tougher test than what they saw tonight.
