The #goacc Moment of the Week (12/4/2015)

The weekly in-depth look at the best (worst?) moments in ACC schadenfreude.

It took a little while for a winner to emerge last week, but that VT player trying to give Ron Cherry the business ended up pulling away at the end there. Last week featured a really strong slate of entries, and this week is no different, y'all. This is really the third straight week where I have literally no idea which one of these is going to win. We've also got a wonderful BAH GAWD this week, a very worthy #suregrin award winner, and a particularly hilarious photoshop. And with that, it's time to vote. Which is your #goacc Moment of the Week? Vote below!

1. Duke fan tired of seeing Jahlil Okafor get punished (h/t @joeovies).

Welcome to Cameron. http://pic.twitter.com/W19wOKHAeF

— Joe Ovies (@joeovies) December 3, 2015

In case you've missed this news, the former Duke player has had a few rough days, apparently wanting to turn into South Park's rendition of Russell Crowe fightin' round the world. This Duke fan just wants to see Jahlil play, Sixers! Don't hurt his feelings!

2. James Michael McAdoo returned to UNC this week with a new fashion statement.

Why is McAdoo wearing an iPhone charger? #goacc http://pic.twitter.com/l7dWdrSiv5

— Will Thompson (@thrillis4) December 2, 2015

Look, I don't know why we all don't start doing this. Ever have that moment when your phone is about to die, and you think to yourself, "Man, I sure wish I had my charger with me!" Well, Jimmy Mike Mac here is just ahead of the curve, y'all. Practical...and fashionable!

3. Cat Barber wore some interesting pants after the loss to Michigan (h/t @lebrownlow).

Also, here are Cat Barber’s pants http://pic.twitter.com/OXdhQUlmLw

— Lauren Brownlow (@lebrownlow) December 2, 2015

I....uh......I don't understand these pants at all.

4. Dabo really just wants to have a pizza party (h/t @ClemsonFB).

Swinney: Regardless of whether we win or lose, we're gonna have a pizza party! This team deserves to be celebrated.

— Clemson Football (@ClemsonFB) December 1, 2015

That's the real motivation behind Clemson's season - Dabo's undying love for terrible Papa John's pizza.

5. Inside Carolina's message boards remain a bizarre place (h/t @JTobben).

New greatest IC post of all time http://pic.twitter.com/D2iEYnGTst

— John (@JTobben) November 30, 2015

There's so much going on here. This is one of three posts this individual has made, I wonder if the other two are equally odd requests. What larger ram is this guy talking about? Doe he want like a mountain ram or something? A Dodge Ram perhaps?

6. Frank Beamer dabbing (h/t @SBNation).

Frank Beamer with ALL THE DABS! https://t.co/VyxKi95zlp https://t.co/k06C4gxGEn

— SB Nation (@SBNation) November 28, 2015

Who am I kidding? This is absolutely going to win this week. There's a reason that Frank is the GOAT of #goacc. Sure am going to miss his shenanigans next year. Hopefully he decides to start commentating some games.

7. Jim Boeheim just can't stop, won't stop digging for gold (h/t @axesmashhammer).

@ADimeBack @NoEscalators My wife spotted this gem. Do with it what you may. http://pic.twitter.com/4q4ORg9ZIe

— Baron vonLitke (@AxeSmashhammer) November 27, 2015

Great find here, Mr. Axesmashhammer. There is no greater tradition in all of sports than Jim Boeheim picking his nose on live television.

8. Florida State had some good advice for the Cleveland Browns after that awful way the Browns lost (h/t @FSU_Football).

Just turn your phone off, @Browns.

— FSU Football (@FSU_Football) December 1, 2015

The best advice anyone can give in that situation. Just power the phone down and walk away.

the #suregrin award.

This week's #suregrin award goes out to clownshow reporter Jeff Goodmon, who has apparently been appointed by ESPN to be the chief narrative correspondent about Ben Simmons. First, let me clarify something for you, ESPN: WE ALL KNOW BEN SIMMONS IS REALLY GOOD. YOU DON'T NEED TO TALK ABOUT HIM EVERY SINGLE NIGHT, PARTICULARLY IN GAMES HE'S NOT EVEN PLAYING IN! With that out of the way, look at this:

For those who want to take shots at LSU frosh Ben Simmons, guy leads nation in rebounding at 14.4. Also averaging 16.2 points, 6.2 assists.

— Jeff Goodman (@GoodmanESPN) November 29, 2015

Yeah, that's what we're doing, Jeff. We're all taking shots at the kid. *facepalm*

Thankfully, @TheBenSwain called him out for that ridiculous statement:

No one is taking shots at Ben Simmons, they’re taking shots at your network’s coverage of Ben Simmons. https://t.co/f4VYDSgxIi

— Ben Swain (@TheBenSwain) November 29, 2015

The best photoshops of the week!

Only one worthy winner this week, and that again goes out to Mr. Mark Armstrong, with another strong use of the Crying MJ Meme:

I'm so sorry. http://pic.twitter.com/Q32WmeEmxP

— Mark Armstrong (@ArmstrongABC11) December 2, 2015

Just spectacular.

And now, for your moment of 'wrasslin...

THE JIM ROSS BAH GAWD MOMENT OF THE WEEK!!

Our favorite segment returns this week in a most thunderous of ways, with this absolute sledgehammer of a dunk from Orlando Johnson on John Stockton's son. Take it away, JR!

(h/t @World_Wide_Wob).

Quick programming note - Akula will be covering for me next week! I'll be back with more #goacc in a couple of weeks. Enjoy your weekend everyone!

NC State bowl watch: Pinstripe Bowl shenanigans could affect Wolfpack

As if the ACC's bowl setup were not confusing enough already, there's also the politicking behind the scenes that we have to contend with in the days leading up to the day when the matchups are set. (That would be Sunday.) Take, for, instance, this string of tweets from the N&O's Joe Giglio, regarding Duke and Pinstripe Bowl.

There has been a push by the Pinstripe Bowl to get Duke but there's some confusion over the ACC's Tier I rules

— Joe Giglio (@jwgiglio) December 3, 2015

Duke in New York would drop Pitt to the Military Bowl, but again, the rules aren't clear if that is possible

— Joe Giglio (@jwgiglio) December 3, 2015

The ACC has said when there are four teams with 8 or more wins, a 6-win team can't get into the Tier I pool

— Joe Giglio (@jwgiglio) December 3, 2015

There's a max of three (with FSU) 8+ teams this year. Pitt and Miami are supposed to be "protected" but perhaps there's a loophole

— Joe Giglio (@jwgiglio) December 3, 2015

If you need a refresher on the bowl setup: There's the Orange Bowl/New Year's Six games (the ACC champ is guaranteed to land there somewhere, and I suspect FSU will get a NY6 game as well. Then the Russell Athletic Bowl picks. Then there are the "Tier One" bowls, as reference by Giglio: Pinstripe, Sun, Belk, and either the Gator or Music City. Tier Two: Military, Independence, Quick Lane (Detroit).

As an eight-win team, Pitt is supposed to be locked into a Tier One bowl, and the Pinstripe is a logical fit there. So it would take some shenanigans to hop Duke past Pittsburgh, thereby pushing the Panthers to the second tier--and into the Military Bowl.

The Military Bowl seems like NC State's most likely landing spot at this point, but if Pitt's pushed down a peg, then the Wolfpack is probably out of luck. Which would then suggest a trip to lovely Shreveport or Detroit. Of course, State could end up in either of those places regardless of what happens with Duke and Pitt. Just something to keep an eye on.

The Donald to Dorton Arena Tomorrow

Donald Trump is coming to Raleigh tomorrow night, where he’ll hold a rally at Dorton Arena. Folks familiar with Raleigh know Dorton Arena as the unusually shaped structure on the State Fairgrounds. And it’s also yuuge, with a seating capacity of over 7,500. Republican political consultant Carter Wrenn is interested to see if Trump can […]

Yanking away the ladder

NC Policy Watch's Altered State series continues:

The unemployed have been subjected to especially severe treatment. North Carolina cut its benefits to the lowest levels in the nation, from a maximum of $535 a week to $350. The reduction rendered more than 170,000 long-term unemployed residents ineligible for additional federal benefits in the second half of 2013. North Carolina was the only state to reject this federal money, even as its unemployment rate topped the national average.

The lowered benefits have pushed some people into a downward spiral difficult to shake off. Ramona Aragon of Durham lost her job as an administrative assistant in March. It was the first time she’d ever been laid off, and she immediately applied for unemployment benefits while she looked for new work. But 15 weeks went by without her application being processed, and, with her savings depleted, she had to sell her belongings and move back into her parents’ home with her two children, 13 and 7.

As depressing as it may be, revisiting these issues is a critical exercise for advocates and those seeking political change. We can't allow the victims of the GOP's warped worldview to fade into obscurity, because they are still suffering and desperately need a remedy that can only be provided in the voting booth.

Pat McCrory channeling Ben Carson

When your past isn't sexy enough, fabricate something:

“Long before I was elected governor, one of the hardest things I ever had to do in my life was to come home after my job was eliminated and tell Ann I didn’t have a job anymore,” the governor says in the video. When he took office in 2013, he continues, “I knew what too many families in our state were going through. Our state had the fifth highest unemployment rate in the country.”

According to a 2014 Greensboro News & Record story about McCrory’s Duke career, Duke eliminated his job as a recruiting manager in 1988, a few months before his wedding. Three weeks later, the company hired him back as its training director – a job with far more responsibility.

And it's very likely that new job didn't come as a surprise to McCrory. When you're planning on promoting somebody in this fashion, you don't keep them in the dark, lest they take a position somewhere else before they get that magic phone call. Meaning, this whole (attempted) tear-jerker about breaking the bad news to his fiancé is nothing but fiction. They probably celebrated.

McCrory versus the Fourth Estate

Pat McCrory kicked off his re-election campaign yesterday with an attack on the News & Observer. He’s selling bumperstickers that read “I don’t believe the Raleigh News & Observer.” It looks like he will go into 2016 with two opponents, Roy Cooper, the likely Democratic nominee, and the Capitol press corps. It’s an interesting strategy. […]

The Sensible Moderate

Donald Trump has crashed the Republican Party and reversed the fortunes of many of his fellow contenders. But there’s one candidate who’s benefited from the rise of Trump and that’s Ted Cruz. Because of Trump, the Senator from Texas looks like a sensible moderate in comparison. Trump has shifted the Overton window enough to the […]
